To all,

Just picked up a NAA .22 mag mini on Sat. Nice little gun I figured for last ditch pocket defense. Bought a box of standard CCI Maxi Mags (40 grain TMJ). Was shooting at a 8-1/2" x 11" sheet of paper tacked against a wood pile back stop. Maybe 15 feet of distance. Out of 50 rounds. I had 3 shots deflect back at me and hit me in the jacket which I thought was pretty strange. All three rounds were recovered by me and had almost zero deformation to them. It looked like they were pulled out of the brass by hand. This didn't make me feel real good.

What are you guys using in these guns? I realize all the ".44 mag or nothing" comments but this gun is a back-up and I just need some ammo advice for better penetration than what I saw yesterday.

Thank you all.

Try the CCI +V or TNT loads. NAA's website technical info shows them as being noticeably hotter than the 40 gr. WMR loads from any manufacturer (including CCI).

I second the vote for CCI's maxi-mag +V (30 grain), their site shows them avg about 1,000 fps out of the short barrell magnum. Its what I keep in my NAA mini ;)

You may want to consult the NAA site as they have velocity figures from their guns. 22 Magnum from this pistol is somewhat similar to 25ACP in terms of ballistic performance. Find the hottest ball load you can find and be done with it.

Southern Raider, the 22 LR is closer to the 25ACP than the 22 MAG. The 22 MAG out performs the 25ACP by a bunch.

kjaniak, I use the Winchester Supreme JHP in my NAA. I have not had one bullet fail to penetrate and pass through a 2 X 4. I carry mine 24/7. :)

In the guns there are designed for, yes, but we are talking a NAA mini-revolver. 25ACP out of a pocket pistol is 40gr at 800fps. 22MAG from a NAA mini is 40gr at 820fps. A slight edge, but not a bunch.

The CCI +V averaged (per NAA website):
1,062 fps from the 1-1/8" mini
1,153 fps from the 1-5/8" mini
1,300 fps from the Black Widow

The bullet weighs only 30 grains, but the edge in velocity over the .25 ACP (700-800 fps, depending on barrel length, and whose chronograph you want to use :scrutiny: ) is significant, in my view.

Stopping power? Forget it! With any of the above! The added velocity (33% - 85%, again depending on the barrel lentghs and chrony reports used) is more likely to result in adequate penetration. The .25 (and .22 LR from pocket pistols) is notorious for failure to penetrate. If I fail to stop a serious assailant, I at least wanna be sure he needs serious medical attention! It's the least I can do! :fire:

I actually regard the "mini" handgun (of any persuasion) as only slightly superior to a knife, maybe, kinda sorta . . .

Decision tree: Can I carry a service sidearm? If "yes", DO SO; if "no" ...
Can I carry a compact or snubbie in a service caliber? If "yes" DO SO; if "no ...
Can I carry a "mini" (Black Widow, Baby Browning, etc.)? If "yes, DO SO; if "no" ... STAY HOME!
:D

This is a discussion that can go on for ever. But more people have been killed with a 22 cal bullet than any other caliber. If you think a 22 MAG is a joke, shot yourself with one. If it will not do damage there should be no problem. :D I carry my NNA 24/7, there are time when the clothing I wear will not allow me to carry my primary weapon, a Colt defender 45ACP. But I can pack my NAA in my front pocket and no one knows it's there. I for one would not want to be shot by one. :what:

Southern Raider, you need to check your ballistic charts, a 22 MAG is a lot faster than 800-900 fps. Also look at the energy side of it compared to a 25ACP. You will be surprised. :D

*wondering out loud*

Does anyone produce a wadcutter for the .22mag? That seems like the best mix of things for the NAA minis, keep the weight the same to velocity's up and still have a big'ol meplat for a little "splat" effect, but have it non or minimally expanding too...

as for the .22 being marginally more effective than a knife, Let's see you stab someone in the head at 15 yards :)

We fall into this same trap when we discuss 22lr vs 25ACP. 22lr info is generally stated from a 6" barrel and 25ACP from a 2". When the barrels are equalized we get a different story.

I would bet that the 22MAG ballistics you have in your head are from a 4"-6" revolver, and they obviously greatly exceed 25ACP. However, please review the chrono data from the NAA website, as we are talking about performance from their pistols. You may be surprised...

Southern Raider,

Have *you* looked at the link you just posted? NAA is getting 1113fps from CCi Maxi-mags +V out of a 1 1/8" barrel. That's appreciably faster than 800 to 900fps, as said.

Well, OK, but I'd also have trouble shooting someone in the head with my NAA "shorty" at 15 yards. :D

I agree. Mine is more like a 15 feet gun.....HAHA.....Thanks guys for the advice.

Yes, I have. Perhaps if you compared similar bullet weights between the calibers you would catch the point of my post, as we can always find a lighter bullet that will go faster. My point was that the routine 40gr FMJ loadings in 25ACP and 22Mag from a NAA mini were roughly equal in terms of ballistic performance, with a very slight edge going to the 22Mag.

Since the CCI Maxi-Mag +V is a 30gr HP, it needs to be compared to a lighter 25ACP loading. Furthermore, since we are critiquing reading comprehension, the 1113fps number you quote is the average maximum from the two guns. 1062fps is the average from the two guns.

According to Goldenlokis website, WWB 50 grain FMJ was getting about 720 FPS from a Raven pistol, which I believe has a 2 1/2 inch barrel.

From a 1 1/8 inch barrel, a 40 grain solid .22LR will get pretty much the same exact velocity.

From the same barrel, a .40 grain solid .22WMR should get about 850 FPS. According to Goldenloki.com, a 40 grain .22 caliber bullet at 850 should penitrate 10-12 inches of ballistic gel, which isnt too bad.

My pick would be the fastest FMJ you can find.

Maybe a good topic for another thread, but do you have some source for this?

Seems like the hundreds of thousands killed in the Civil War with .54 cal miniball would be a higher figure.

How about any of the more common rounds used in WWI or WWII?

And when did the commies like the Chinese, N. Koreans, Warsaw bloc, and the 3rd Worlders start using 7.62x39? That's a been popular round for military use for a long while.

There was a delightful little old southern lady in her 80s (her name escapes me at the moment) who used to conduct battlefield tours at Vicksburg. She used to point out a monument that includes a huge stone Minnieball (they were mostly .58 caliber) and give a nice talk about the Minnieball. She would end up with, "Th' Minnieball has kilt more people than th' Atomic Bomb."

Kjan- I am looking to pick one up as well for a backup. BTW- My in laws live in Marlboro, and I am only a few cities over from you in C Falls. Are you hitting the show in Berea this weekend?

I use Velociter's in both of my Naa mini revolvers (.22lr and .22mag)

Ya just cant beat a pistol that you can carry around your neck as a "last ditch" or "last act of defiance!"...got one around mine as we speak!

NAA Black Widow

I have a NAA Black Widow / 22 mag. I load it up with the following :
1-Winchester Super X 40 gr./ 2 CCI Maxi mag + V /1 Remington 40gr./
& 2 CCI WMR Shotshell. Just a little variety. Works for me. Oh BTW I always carry the Widow in my front pocket. :) :)

The point was he had 3 rounds deflect back at him. I've never had a 25 auto do that.
I consider these small pistols long range '10to20feet' ice picks neat little holes about 6 to 8 in deep. To distract the BG while I'am hauling A**
