I've been wondering if anyone has compared a max. load of 4f Goex with a max. load of smokless in the NAA Companion. The max load of 4f seems fairly hefty to me. I've never tried any smokeless in it and probably never will. Just curious.

I've tried a max load of smokeless in my LR and magnum frame Companions, they both handled it well. I find that the bullets lead my bore under a full charge, so I stripped the lube off them and gave them a copper plating with a homebrew plating tank. That load is a loud one from that short barrel to say the least, and pretty powerful. The 30 grain RN bullets expand like crazy, I also tried hollow points from pulled Winchester bulk .22 LR. I trimmed them to 30 grains and loaded them under the same load, 2 grains of bullseye. Again, really lethal expansion.

I also tried a compressed load of FFFFG. The bullet had significantly less energy, but it still made a nice loud boom. My guess is it was around 600-700 FPS. :)

Thanks, you cured my curisity. I knew you had experimented with smokless and would most likely have an answer for me. 600-700 FPS with BP should be enough for me. Plinking is all I do, but I expect this little feller would be ok for SD in a pinch. As they say it's better than a stick. But if needed I can always whip out my 'ol Remy. It will surly get the BG's attention.

Guess I should invest in a chrony, but finances won't allow that at this time. But maybe someday.
Thanks again

You're welcome bud, once I get the oppertunity to do so I'll chrono my Super Companion. I had a cylinder I'd left loaded with pyrodex and carried for about 8 months that I fired the other day. All five rounds popped off, and all 5 rounds zipped right through a 1/2" wet cedar plank I was shooting at. And the 1/2" plywood wall of my shop into the dirt behind it. Great gun safety!

I will carry a pyrodex load if that's what is in the gun. I'm not going to go to the trouble to unload the darn thing just so I can reload with smokeless. That kind of penetration would get through a bad guy's brain box, if the sight of a gun didn't scare him off. Good enough! :)

I chronoed a charge of bullseye between 1100 and 1200 fps with the 30 grain NAA conicals. I've carried this gun before, but now I have a NAA Black Widow that's equal in power, shoots the Hornady Critical Defense quite well, groups about 3.5" at 25 yards from the bench. The thing I like about the super companion is swapping loaded cylinders is easier than reloading the BW. The nipples are recessed much better than most C&B cylinders and it's safer to carry a loaded one in a watch pocket, but some might still be queezy about this.

I haven't even shot the super companion in a while. Best I've done with it is about 8-10" groups at 25 yards. It's best employed up close, I suppose, but the BW is significantly more accurate on swinging targets, even, if a little more...uh....a LOT more expensive to shoot.

I've been thinkin' I'd like a C&B Earl to play with, 4" barrel, might get a bit better accuracy out of it with the added sight radius. It could substitute for the .22 plinkers I can't seem to find bulk ammo for. I'd get the .22 mag sized frame so's my other cylinders would work in it.
