A 73-year-old Fort Worth woman shot her finger after arguing with her son because she had been walking around the house naked, police said.

Fort Worth police were called to a house in the 5600 block of De Cory Road around 1:30 a.m. Friday when they found Bertha McElroy with a bullet wound in her left index finger, according to a police report.

Ms. McElroy was taken to John Peter Smith hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Police said that Ms. McElroy told them she had gotten into an argument with her son Keith McElroy, 53 because she had been walking around the house in the nude.

Ms. McElroy told police that after the argument her son walked outside and slammed the door. She then went into the bedroom to load the gun when she shot her finger.

Police said they unloaded the gun and gave it to Mr. McElroy.

Tina Robinson, Ms. McElroy's daughter, said the shooting was an accident and that her mother was not nude. "There was no argument at all," she said.

Ms. Robinson said her mother often kept a gun at her bedside and was reaching for it when the accident occurred.

"My mom is a good Christian woman, an upstanding citizen and church member for many, many years," Ms. Robinson said.

I have to wonder what is wrong with folks.

Well in this one it sounds like what's wrong with her is senility.

The elderly lady is the only one telling the "nude" story, the daughter says it didn't happen. Sounds like the woman is making excuses for accidentally shooting herself.

What's wrong here is simply old age, very sad.

Walking around naked in front of son ... argument with son ... loading (or even just reaching for) a gun ...

Can you say dysfunctional family?

I knew you could!

TR - you might be absolutely right.

Half the population has a below-average IQ.

Should we be surprised when empirical evidence appears?

As a wag on another board pointed out, that headline could just as easily have read "53 year old man shoots himself after seeing 73 year old mother walking around naked."

:D

Yeah, uh, huh.

All I can ask is:

***???:confused::confused:

Seriously, that gun would be better off given to someone else who is sensible, responsible, and wise enough to own it.

Either this family is seriously dysfunctional, or the elderly woman is growing senile. I'm leaning towards the latter.

I assure you that old age is indeed getting sad - not sure anythings simple about it though ! :p

For all of us who are starting to creep up in age this is a reminder that due to whatever circumstance, we need to either be able to have, and use a firearm safely - or surrender to our lack of capability.

On the other hand, accidents happen, and to much younger people as we have read on this board, so maybe assuming that old age is the key factor isn't the right answer either.

I'll avoid any comments on how HOT ! a person of this age may or may not look in the nude ! The mind can stay young a lot longer than the body ! LOL

So lets get this straight, an elderly woman was walking around her house nude and her son gets upset about this. Then, the woman goes to get a gun to shoot him and accidently shoots her finger??? What on earth was going through her head? The only part that makes sense is that the elderly woman’s daughter is trying to save her mothers dignity by denying the part about the nudity and argument.
Is it me, or are most of these wacky stories I come across take place in Fort Worth??

NEWS OF THE WEIRD!

But like the man said, what does this have to do with firearms?

Hopefully mom will get a full medical exam and a checkup from the neck up.

This is the sort of thing that requires outside intervention.

The son should have realized that something was medically wrong with mom, and sought assistance, as soon as the bizarre behavior began.

old age 73?

Heyyyyy, Going On 72 Here, Remark About 73 Being "old" Sure Made My Day! Thanks Alot!! Hehehe

"My mom is a good Christian woman, an upstanding citizen and church member for many, many years," Ms. Robinson said.

The people who try to play the "I'm a Christian" card tend to be the worst offenders in my experience.

I'm Christian but I don't use it as my get out of jail free card.
