Name of Powder Test and Methodology

Several years back an acquaintance at my local range mentioned a type of power test. The general idea was that there was a sweet spot where a few tenths of grain of powder either way would not affect accuracy, velocity, etc. The test was to find that sweet spot. Since I'm loading some rifle rounds on a progressive press, I thought it may be helpful. The guy knew an incredible amount about reloading and sadly is no longer around.

Does anyone know of such a test and how to conduct it?

There's another one based on chronograph data called the Satterlee.
