Scooter,
Buford definitly has a lot of credentials, and if you'll give him a few days, he'll be more than happy to expound upon them for you.
I have three big problems with Buford and the way he runs his classes.
First, he teaches to the lowest common denominator, and I do mean
lowest . His way of giving the state-mandated test is to read the questions aloud and the class responds en masse with the answer. So, if you're an idiot and don't have a clue, you can still get a 100% on the test. No need to pay attention, just wake up in time for the test.
Second, he spends a majority of his time telling antecdotes, and very little covering the laws or weapons handling techniques. He has a million and one stories, and is always willing to impart them on you. I think the reason he limits the amount of time spent on technique is that he wants the people who are serious about learning to sign up for one of his other classes, therefore making him more money.
The third problem I have with Buford is the range experience I had while taking his course. I took the course as part of getting state-certified as a private security guard, and therefore had to qualify with each weapon I wanted to be able to carry. I shot 50/50 on all three weapons, but there were some who had a difficult time getting the minimum 35/50. There was one old lady getting guard certified who had to have the range safety stand behind her and support her arms while she fired her old S&W Military & Police. I'd hate to have to rely on her to protect me or mine.
He also has everyone fire using a retention technique that I don't prefer. He requires everyone to shoot the 3 meter targets with the weapon against the weak side shoulder, with the body turned 90 degrees from the target, both hands on the gun. The 7 meter targets are engaged with the same basic stance, but with the weapon just slightly extended in front. The 3 meter targets would not be fun with a snubnose or a ported weapon.
Also, if you intend to qualify using any model of Glock, be prepared to hear all about how terrible they are and that the cops only use them because they're built by the lowest bidder. I'm not a big fan of the Glock, but I don't think they're as bad as Buford makes them out to be. According to the Gospel according to Buford, the only guns worth a tinker's damn are the Ruger SP101 and the Beretta 92. I should also note that Buford is a FFL and a factory-authorized Ruger dealer. He'll be more than happy to sell you one of his beloved SP101's. Buford is very adamant about which guns he likes and which ones he dislikes. If you do have a model he dislikes, he will be certain to explain to you why that particular gun is an abomination.
