Can anyone point me toward the different classes in the Nashville area, more specifically, Murfreesboro? Maybe there's a list online somewhere, if so lemme know. I'd appreciate any recommendations.
Thanks

Here's a short list of some instructors in the area. Some are better than others, but of course, opinions regarding instructors quality are subjective.

J. Buford Tune, APPS

Also, check out this link:
TN state certified schools

There are some more in the area, but the above link has quite a few listed.

Here's one in Murfreesboro, but I've never heard anything about them, I just found them on the net.
MFTC

Hope this helps.
Frank

P.S. In the second lin, there is a hyperlink for APS in Joelton. If you click on that, it'll take you to a website for the store. Their classes run $90. However, according to the site, if you bring in a copy of that page, they take $10 off the price. So, you only pay $80 for the class, which is about the cheapest you'll find around here.

Gun City in Nashville on mufreesboro rd by the aladin plant has a class. I am not sure of the class price. I think that it is in the $100 to $150 range.

As with most people around here I say stay away from Gun City. Their range and people are almost dangerous.

Darrin and another coworker went though the course up at ASP in Joelton off exit 35 on I24. Its an excelent class from what ive heard from people that have went though it. I plan to go up there sometime as well. Its I believe 85 and that will include a gun rental if you want it, they have various glocks a 22/45, 1911, and a revolver or two i think to rent. Darrin can speak up more about it....so can the 'slingers i believe

I took my permit class and another class from Personal Responsibility Inc.
The web address is www.prifirearmstraining.com. The class was in bellvue and range time was off the I-40 bucksnort exit so it is a little bit of a drive. That being said, I recommend them without hesitation to anyone looking for training in the mid-tenn area. Check out the website.

My shootin' buddy's wife just took a course somewhere in the 'Boro-I'll find out the info and e-mail you. He's pretty good about doing his research so I know this was a good-straight up course. He's taken lots of advanced courses and is very knowledgeable-he probably can help you with places to shoot out that way. I believe they're out of town so it may be next week before I talk to them.

N'ville Carry Classes

check out www.therangeinc.com ... John Hutcherson teaches a very good carry class. The classroom part is held in Brentwood; his outdoor range is a bit of a drive to Hickman County, about an hour from N'villle. I would highly recommend him and his instructors.

Buford Tune with Apps is an idiot. I would not give him the time of day.

1911, is there a particular reason you don't like Buford Tune? He seems to have lots of credentials and a buddy of mine who's taken his class says he's excellent and highly recommends him.

Scooter,

Buford definitly has a lot of credentials, and if you'll give him a few days, he'll be more than happy to expound upon them for you.

I have three big problems with Buford and the way he runs his classes.

First, he teaches to the lowest common denominator, and I do mean lowest . His way of giving the state-mandated test is to read the questions aloud and the class responds en masse with the answer. So, if you're an idiot and don't have a clue, you can still get a 100% on the test. No need to pay attention, just wake up in time for the test.

Second, he spends a majority of his time telling antecdotes, and very little covering the laws or weapons handling techniques. He has a million and one stories, and is always willing to impart them on you. I think the reason he limits the amount of time spent on technique is that he wants the people who are serious about learning to sign up for one of his other classes, therefore making him more money.

The third problem I have with Buford is the range experience I had while taking his course. I took the course as part of getting state-certified as a private security guard, and therefore had to qualify with each weapon I wanted to be able to carry. I shot 50/50 on all three weapons, but there were some who had a difficult time getting the minimum 35/50. There was one old lady getting guard certified who had to have the range safety stand behind her and support her arms while she fired her old S&W Military & Police. I'd hate to have to rely on her to protect me or mine. :barf: He also has everyone fire using a retention technique that I don't prefer. He requires everyone to shoot the 3 meter targets with the weapon against the weak side shoulder, with the body turned 90 degrees from the target, both hands on the gun. The 7 meter targets are engaged with the same basic stance, but with the weapon just slightly extended in front. The 3 meter targets would not be fun with a snubnose or a ported weapon.

Also, if you intend to qualify using any model of Glock, be prepared to hear all about how terrible they are and that the cops only use them because they're built by the lowest bidder. I'm not a big fan of the Glock, but I don't think they're as bad as Buford makes them out to be. According to the Gospel according to Buford, the only guns worth a tinker's damn are the Ruger SP101 and the Beretta 92. I should also note that Buford is a FFL and a factory-authorized Ruger dealer. He'll be more than happy to sell you one of his beloved SP101's. Buford is very adamant about which guns he likes and which ones he dislikes. If you do have a model he dislikes, he will be certain to explain to you why that particular gun is an abomination.

Scooter ,

OEF_VET said a mouthful.

Buford Tune is a legend, in his own mind.

The man is a idiot pure and simple. I have seen him have 100 students on the firing line and 3 instructors. His range safety is a joke and I have witnessed him on more than one occasion pull a loaded sig 380 out of his pocket and point it at someone for a joke. Ha Ha.

He use to run around Nashville when he was with the Metro Police department and call in fake pursuits and one time he faked a shooting that he was suppose to have been at.

The funniest thing about him has to be the way he left Metro. He will tell you it was due to a disability. The truth is that he pisssed off the Chief by releasing a confidential document that was highly classified by the department and gave away a bunch of strategies the police department had in place in case or a riot. It is in his discharge papers from the police department that he is unfit for duty and a danger to the public with a firearm.

Now don’t you feel better knowing that he is a firearms instructor with great credentials?

I second what WingedSnake said. I took my carry class with John Hutcherson at www.therangeinc.com and was quite pleased--so much so that I went back and took an Advanced Pistol class with John. At the time, the classes were co-taught by Ken Alexandrow, who also teaches shooting for Metro. Don't know how John runs the classes now, but I'm sure he'd respond to an email inquiry.

1911, I didn't come here to refute anything. I posted the thread because I wanted good objective advice. I appreciate your comments.

I think a person makes the best decisions when he objectively compares all the information he has, both pro and con. This forum is the perfect place to get both, which is why I asked the question in the first place.

Scooter,

It wasn’t intended for you. I figured one of the Buford Cronies would pick up on it and try and set me strait.

That would be a big mistake on their part.

Though it's a bit of a drive, I highly recommend Tom Givens at RangeMaster in Memphis. www.rangemaster.com

His book is outstanding, his "Wednesday Lecture" is as good as Cooper.

He greatly expands on the minium requirements set forth for the TN carry permit. You'll learn far more than in most TN CCW classes.

ASP in Joelton is worth the $90. Rob knows his stuff and does a great job passing the info on.

I'll agree with avoiding Gun Sh..., I mean, Gun City.

On Target Reloading Center in Manchester. Ask for John Moore, 931-728-5327. He does a good job, classes are small, never more than 10 or 12. Just as close to you as Nashville, just the other direction. Known him personally for years.

Leroy Farris in Rockvale is a stand-up guy. He's really updated his website since the last time I saw it. A full-time policeman down in Brentwood, he has handled a few firearms transfers for me, and I've conversed with him on several occasions. I don't think you could go wrong if you took your carry class with him. He's both knowledgeable and likeable. You know, I might look into his shotgun course.
