Our illustrious newly-elected mayor just joined this wretched organization, and in celebration the local paper has a story telling the general public about the danger of "automatic weapons." (Semi-automatic? Fully automatic? The reporter doesn't seem to care.)

If you click the link, below the mayor's picture there's a discussion board hosted by The Forum's website. I want help racking up voices for our side - but only from those who can KEEP IT CIVIL since the comments posted often end up being printed in the Sunday edition. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Fargo Mayor Dennis Walaker will join mayors from across the country next week in a show of opposition to illegal firearms.

Walaker plans to attend the National Summit of Mayors Against Illegal Guns on Monday in Washington, D.C.

Walaker said he’s a lifelong hunter, but said he staunchly opposes automatic weapons – going so far as to drop his National Rifle Association membership because of the organization’s position on the issue – and the illegal gun sales that allow criminals to obtain them.

“I don’t see a need for them, and I don’t like to see anybody up against law enforcement having better weapons than we can provide for law enforcement,” he said.

Mayors Against Illegal Guns arose from an initial meeting held in April 2006, hosted by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, to discuss ways to stop the flow of illegal guns into U.S. cities, according to the coalition’s Web site.

Walaker joined the coalition in August by signing a statement of principles drafted at the initial meeting.

Fargo is the only North Dakota city that belongs to the group, which has been expanded to 123 cities.

The coalition aims to punish criminals who possess, use and traffic illegal guns; target irresponsible gun dealers; oppose federal efforts to restrict cities’ access to gun-tracing data; develop technologies that aid in detecting and tracing illegal guns; and support local, state and federal legislation that targets illegal guns.

Fargo Police Capt. Tod Dahle said Fargo officers don’t encounter illegal firearms as often as their counterparts in big cities like Minneapolis, but they still deal with the problem.

“And we do so more often than we did in the past,” he said.

The majority of guns discovered during drug-trafficking stings are illegal firearms that have been stolen or acquired through drug transactions, Dahle said.

While in Washington, Walaker also will attend the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ 75th Winter Meeting.

He said he plans to meet with North Dakota’s congressional delegation to lobby for issues important to Fargo, including flood control.

Looks as if your mayor Walaker is just another typical left wing political prostitute. He's wallowing in the usual Democratic lies, hoping one of the "big boys" in the Democratic party will pat him on the head and throw him a scrap or two from the Democratic table.

It's obvious he's as dumb as a bucket of rocks... which always plays well with the "I want free stuff from Big Brother" crowd. Those are who vote for political prostitutes such as he.

Go to a meeting where he's speaking. If they allow it, pin him down with FACTS. Make him look like the moron he is.

Looks like Alaska, Arizona, Idaho, Kansas, New Hampshire, West Virginia, & Wyoming are the only states with no participating mayors.

I wonder, if they're just supposed to be against illegal guns, what is there to talk about?:cuss:

The sad thing is that we seem to elect people that don't stand for anything. They just keep changing their views to seem to agree with what is the view of the news media of the day.

Then again, politics has gotten so dirty and underhanded, good people don't see the reason to even try. Trying to work for our country or way of life just gets them and their family smeared with whatever the opposition trash the makes up. Truth seems to be lost to most of the sad people in oursociety today.

Walaker said he’s a lifelong hunter, but...

This mantra has replaced "for the children" among the antis. Anytime you hear a politician say it, listen very caerfully to what follows the "but"

but said he staunchly opposes automatic weapons

It's always lots of fun to see if these yahoos even understand what that means.

Walaker said he’s a lifelong hunter, but said he staunchly opposes automatic weapons – going so far as to drop his National Rifle Association membership because of the organization’s position on the issue – and the illegal gun sales that allow criminals to obtain them.
Did I miss that particular NRA memo stating their newfound position favoring illegal gun sales of "automatic weapons" to criminals?

I guess I'd be against that too, if it were true. Maybe. Probably. (Does a hyphen equate to a comma in this publication, or is this three disjointed thoughts combined?)

Is it alright for a Fargo hunter to buy, own and use an "automatic weapon" when in the course of hunting? Is it okey-dokey for the Fargo police to buy, own and use "automatic weapons" while on the prowl keeping Fargo safe? National Guard (should they be called out to assist the citizens of Fargo in the event of a blizzard/flood/tornado aftermath), is it bad form that they have, in their possession, "automatic weapons"? Is it still acceptable for a law-abiding Fargo citizen who is not a lifelong hunter to buy, own and use an "automatic weapon"? Or does Mayor Walaker's staunch opposition to "automatic weapons" mean he's thinking of enacting new Fargo legislation making "automatic weapons" illegal to buy, own and use? Or perhaps legislation criminalizing even further, the illegal sales of "automatic weapons" to known criminals?

I think it'd be safe to say that most everyone would be against a criminal using a single shot flintlock weapon, a Louisville Slugger or even a bowling ball during the course of committing a crime.

And just what IS the agreed definition of... an "automatic weapon"?

Enquiring minds want to know...

here's the best part of that drivel...

“I don’t see a need for them, and I don’t like to see anybody up against law enforcement having better weapons than we can provide for law enforcement,” he said.

interesting. so, since walaker 'SEES' no need for them, that means there IS no need for them? that's strange, evil, egocentric logic if i ever read it. and i'm sure he doesn't want anybody having better weapons than his police, but that's just too bad. the 2nd ammendment is in place expressly so that joe civilian CAN have the very SAME weapons as his police. who gives these people a voice anyway?

Thanks for the words of encouragement and the logical arguments gents. We were lucky - it's been a couple of slow days for the news, and this was today's headline in the printed edition. That means a lot of people saw it and the story didn't fall away to page 3 or more. There's been a lot of great posts on the discussion board, and our side is clearly winning (logical arguments from gun owners vs. sarcastic whining from the hoplophobes).

Given the attention the story's getting, and the volume of stench this is going to stir up with gun owners (probably 45-60% of the mayor's voting constituency), I wouldn't be surprised if Mr. Walaker finds himself job hunting in 4 years' time.

Thanks again everyone!

Fine. Kick the parasite out of office.
