Tomorrow I am taking my oath to become a citizen. Previously, when purchasing guns, I had to present my green card and 3 months of utility bills showing 90 days of residency. They called in for a NICS check and it ALWAYS came back delayed and ultimately got approved. Here are my questions:

1. If I go to buy a gun tomorrow and mark that I am a citizen in the 4473 and they call it in, will the background check systems be updated with my new immigration status same day as I take the oath?

2. Should I wait until I go to the SS office to update my status with them and wait till I get a passport before trying to buy a gun?

3. On my green card and now the naturalization document, they have a middle name listed. It is not listed on ANY other docs such as SSN card, driver's license, FOID card (I live in the USSR-IL). Would this be the culprit for my delays since I always put NMN for the middle name field?

Thanks in advance.

No idea on #1 - just assuming standard gov't bureaucracy, I wouldn't expect an update in any reasonable time period. As to #2, there's no requirement to put an SS on a 4473 so I doubt that updating with the SS folks would make a difference.

I'm also on a green card and have never been delayed so I would suspect that the middle name confusion has been a likely cause of your delays.

Try buying one as a citizen and see what happens - worse that should happen would be another delay.
You probably should have had the middle name confusion cleared up so that it didn't propagate to the naturalization docs.

They just "issued" you a middle name and you don't have one, or you've been mistakenly filling out your forms in the past? If the latter, that's a likely cause for your delays.

1. I don't think the background checks are linked to citizenship records at all. I believe they are linked to criminal records which would include DV ROs and NCIC watch lists. If they are if are they certainly won't be updated in one day. Criminal records usually aren't.

2. I can't see why this would make any difference.

3. If you're encountering delays it may or may not have anything to do with your middle initial.

Thank you for pursuing your residence and now citizenship in a legal fashion.

Thanks for the congrats. I went through the ceremony today and I have to say that I got a little choked up. Totally unexpected and it completely caught me off guard. It was really cool to hear the judge talk about the responsibilities of citizens and that the oath has not changed in over 200 years. It was really cool to see all the different cultures represented and we were all there for the same reason. Now that I have that out of the way, I can vote to get these idiots in IL out of office! Man, that will feel great!

Anyway, to clear things up a little bit, I have a middle name. I guess when we came here to the States, my parents listed it with the INS. I never used it on any documents and noticed it when renewing my green card. It is now on my naturalization certificate, but, will not be in my passport. Next time I buy a gun, I will list it and see what happens.

Bart,

I am also a green card holder. I was initially denied on my first gun purchase, appealed and was apporved in a week. The next 2 purchases ended up with delays with approval the following day. I got tired of the waiting so I applied for the VAF (Volunteer Appeal File). I have made 3 or 4 purcahses with it, handguns and a longguns. I walked out of the store with they toys the same day.

The middle name is the problem. I had a green card then became a citizen but even now there is confusion each time I forget my middle name or did not use an hyphen ( I have an hyphenated last name) on the form.
Enter your name exactly as on the naturalization document and it should work.
Do not expect them to update your file immediately, it will take months.
