I've had this bug about trying a muzzleloading shotgun but didn't know anyone with one. So I decided to get one and try it. I'm sending off the check tomorrow.

I have delusions about loading it with buckshot in one barrel and a ball or slug in the other for deer hunting and also using it on doves with #8 shot.

What do I need for this delusion and where can I get the components. I have plenty of lead but am not aware of where I can buy a mold for Forster-type slugs. I also need cards and wads and maybe a shot dispenser.

Any help is appreciated.

Also, IF you're going to carry your shot into the field as opposed to pre loaded, get the Irish headed shot flask, the English head is good but is a little more difficult to use in certain hunting situations. The Irish head is a lot more adaptable for hunting.

I've owned and hunted with a bunch of these shotguns, its a challenge but once you get the hang of them they are deadly.

I've had that same itch myself but have yet to acquire a muzzleloading shotgun. Someday a real nice deal will show up, but so far I think the fact that reloading modern shot shells is so easy and inexpensive that I've just gone that route and keep waiting for a better deal on a muzzleloading shotgun to turn up. I might have to keep a better eye out.

Used to shoot Lyman Foster slugs in a Navy Arms "Magnum" BP double...patched them and they shot pretty well. I think I used about 3 1/2 drams of FFg.
You can get the Lee Keydrive slug moulds for about $30. Get the 1 oz one, patch it tight and see how it shoots.
I'd recommend checking the second barrel to be sure the slug/or shot has not moved forward after firing the first barrel. Never happened to me but if you load stiff it could move forward under recoil.
I loaded the powder, a .135 card wad, the slug patched in an oiled Indian Head linen patch. Try different patch materials and choose the one that requires a good whap on the short starter to get it in the bore and a good shove to get it down. Less chance of it moving.

Would one barrel have some choke, my Pedersoli does. I have some rifled slugs removed from old 12 gauge shells but hesitated to use them.

Mine were both cylinder to begin with. I jug choked them both to somewhere between I.C. And mod.

Pietta

I have a Pietta 12 ga. SXS.... took a pheasant with it just before deer season started here in PA.
I carry preloaded charges - plastic vials. A dozen or so of 1-1/8 oz #6 shot in one pocket and an equal amount loaded with 75 grains of FFg BP in another. Wads and cards also in pockets. Caps are in a holder around my neck.
Loading other than shot....stay with a patched round ball...easier all around and effective...as large a ball and thick a patch as you can get down the bore.
