Gas station clerk shoots suspect

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A convenience store clerk shot a man who was trying to rob the store early Sunday morning.

Witnesses called police after a man entered the Express Mart on the 3400 block of Wilkinson Boulevard around 6:40 a.m. They said a confrontation was going on between the clerk and the man on the property.

“We do know that the clerk fired shots in self-defense and one of the rounds did strike the suspect,” said Sgt. Steve Huber, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Freedom Division.

The man fled from the store on foot, but police tracked him down just a few blocks away. With the help of a canine unit, they had the man in custody in under a half hour.

“We were searching for him and fortunately for us when he got to wherever he was going he realized that he had been shot and he ended up calling the police to report that he had been shot,” Huber said.

The suspect was transported to the hospital but his injuries are not life-threatening. Police said he faces charges for attempted robbery and could face additional charges.

The store clerk sustained minor injuries during the incident. He received treatment from paramedics at the scene.

Police said store clerks are allowed to carry a gun as long as they have permission from the store owner. Witnesses said the clerk not only had a gun, but was also wearing a bulletproof vest.

John Kennedy, an employee at another service station on Wilkinson Boulevard, said clerks have to be careful.

“If it’s something you can afford and have access to, if you are a store clerk, it would be money well-spent,” Kennedy said of the vest.

Police said they understand why robbers are drawn to such stores.

“You are working in a location with money that is open 24 hours a day, and those that want the money and they know you are open on Sunday morning – the suspects naturally go where the money is,” Huber said.

The incident was not the first time police have responded to a call to the store. Police reports show officers have been called there 51 times since the start of the year.

Police have not released the names of anyone involved.

If the police have been called to this store 51 times this year, I would dang sure have protection on me to be working there. I'm glad they didn't try to go negative on the clerk for carrying.

Seriously. 51 times a year is just about weekly. If I worked in a place that needed the cops _every week_, I wouldn't get behind the counter without an interceptor OTV, some bullet-resistant glass, and some of those slick security guns like the ones on the ticket booth in The Fifth Element.

Really....

Really a NICE neighborhood.... REALLY nice...

Police report over 51 calls in just over half a year?????????

That is twice a week more or less....

I think I'd look for another job...

Holy Crap

I know the area. It's a few miles from my place. Understand this, Charlotte is divided between the new and old south. That area is really bad. I don't even like driving over there. About 2 or 3 months ago, someone drove a stolen van into the front window of the gun shop that's down the block from where this recent action occurred. Sometime last Fall, I was coming out of a store and some gun ran up on me trying to rob me. I got my .45 out first and pointed it to his face. It's really a shame when I hear about things like this. I left New York and while living there, I never worried about crime--here in Charlotte, it's a big fear of mine. I never leave the house without a pistol.

I suppose if an area becomes that bad, the city might just shut down any businesses, utilities, etc., string concertina wire around it, and declare it a "free fire zone" with no more law enforcement for a year. One entrance in- on foot- and everyone gets searched going in and out. I would think it would be deserted in short order and a year later pull the wire and start from scratch. I am not really serious- it just popped into my head.

I live in Charlotte a few months out of the year. Violent crime is up 42% since last year.

As others from NC can attest, Wilkinson Boulevard in Charlotte is indeed a cesspool, and currently the focus of a major crackdown on prostitution, which flourishes in the area. I'm confident that many of these 51 police calls involved complaints for hooking.

Cheers,
DR

The highest priced gun store in Charlotte is on that road.Explains how they get the prices for what they sell.

Charlotte government is a testimony to the ineffectiveness of feelgood, blissninnism at running things. A few weeks ago the cities had 5 killings in one night. Gang grafitti everywhere while the police chief says, "All things considered, I rather be doing community outreach rather than putting folks in jail." Yup, just what the goober said on a radio talk show.

Bandit, yeah me too,if you won't good prices on a gun and don't mind it being
ordered-I know a real good guy to deal with.If the distributor has it in stock,he usually has in 1-2 days.pm if you ever want the info.
