It has been reported to GRNC that the House Rules Committee has inserted into HB 413 study commission language which, among other things, creates and funds a study commission on gun trafficking. It has been further reported that the language is substantially similar to Senator Tony Rand's bill, SB 892.
Please be advised that Grass Roots North Carolina opposes creation of what can only be described as a "gun owner harassment commission." Sen. Rand's bill rests on biased and uproven assertions regarding the sale of firearms in North Carolina. Moreover, because the language has been subject to absolutely no public debate, neither gun dealers nor gun owners are even aware of the creation of such a commission, much less protected by having representation on the commission.
Gun owners will see this bill for what it is: An underhanded effort to pass gun control legislation in the dark of night, carefully avoiding input from individuals and businesses which stand to be impacted.
GRNC will track both procedural and substantive votes on this language, and on any bill which contains it. Those votes will be used in candidate evaluations in GRNC's next "Remember in November" voter education project, by which we distribute more than 80,000 voter guides. In the 2004 election, 64,000 of those guides were mailed directly to gun-owning voters.
