Hey Guys,

I need some clarifying on the NC Gun laws. The question I have is:

Is it legal, for a Minor (In my son's case 17) to transport a firearm (RIFLES!! No handguns) In a vehicle without the supervision of an adult?

Same applies to the Ammo which I am assuming will be the same with the rifles?

Just need some clarifying on this. I do not want to allow my son, to transport a rifle without it being legal.

Thanks,

I thought vehicle transportation of long guns was governed soley by the feds and not NYC but I'm not an expert on this question, however, I did live in NYC.

I read today that mayor Bloomberg will try to reduce the fees for pistol permits (NY Post)

NYC, May be a little different than NC. Haha, However thanks for the input. Im interested in the way other states govern their gun laws.

Here's a link to the Attorney Generals publication on firearms laws.

http://www.ncdoj.com/getdoc/32344299-a2a7-4ae5-99fd-9018262f64ac/2007-NC-Firearms-gun-Laws.aspx

This publication states,

"North Carolina General Statute § 14-269.7 provides that it is a misdemeanor for any person under the age of 18 to possess or carry a handgun."

"Under G.S. § 14-316, a guardian or parent of a child under 12 may not allow such child to have possession, custody, or the use of any gun, pistol, or dangerous firearm, except under the parent or guardian's direct supervision."

Given these to restrictions, it is lawful for your son to possess and transport a rifle, however, you will want to read the section on transporting firearms, namely, it may not be concealed and readily accessible to the occupants. In the trunk, behind a pickup sear, or all the way in the back of a mini van would meet this requirement. Although in practice, we've always carried rifles and shotguns in cases on the floor board of whatever vehicle we were driving.

Ok, Thanks. I'll make sure he does stay safe with it and will store it in the back of his SUV. I guess he can put the rifles in the cases and store them in the front with the ammo, and targets in the cargo area of his SUV.

Thanks for the clarification!
