Nebraska lawmaker introduces assault weapons ban

The more I think about it, the more this line ticks me off:

"who I am sure will be concerned about not including weapons that are commonly used in hunting or competitive shooting."

You know what it sounds like? "Don't worry, we're the government and we know what's best for you".

We need to make sure the senators responsible for this do NOT get reelected. At least we won't have to worry about Chambers any more.

(Neb.)-Senator Louden's Weekly Report

By: Chris Fankhauser Posted at: 03/06/2008 03:45 PM

LB 958, which deals with firearms, has generated many negative comments from District 49 constituents. I’d like to use this week’s column to describe LB 958, its amendments, and my reason for opposing it.

Initially, LB 958 included many provisions. There was a requirement that individuals report a lost or stolen firearm to local law enforcement within 48 hours after discovery of loss or theft. All firearms retailers would have had to include a trigger or gun lock with each firearm sale. The bill would have imposed a minimum five year prison sentence for use of a firearm to commit a felony. Law enforcement personnel who found a minor illegally in possession of a firearm would have had to determine how the minor gained possession and to report that information to the State Patrol. The State Patrol would have been required to conduct a public awareness campaign which would include a hotline for anonymous reporting of juveniles suspected of possessing a firearm. The bill would have changed from five to ten years the amount of time the state would keep mental health commitment records. Finally, LB 958 would have set up a Gun Violence Commission to recommend ways to reduce illegal gun sales and gun trafficking. It was a hodgepodge of ideas.

As amended by the Judiciary Committee, LB 958 is simpler. The bill now would do one thing: set up an Assault Weapons Commission. The commission would have seven members: the chair of the Judiciary Committee, the Governor, the Attorney General, the head of the State Patrol, a law enforcement officer from Omaha, a law enforcement officer from another city, and a firearms retailer. The commission would define assault weapons, compile a list of weapons that fit the definition, recommend enforcement procedures, and report to the Legislature every other year, with the first report due February 1, 2009.

I did not support LB 958 when it was first introduced, nor do I support it as amended. It’s not necessary to set up another unit of government to examine the various firearms available to law abiding citizens. In addition, I do not think that it is a good idea to define firearms and then place restrictions on them because of how they are defined. I will oppose LB 958 when the Legislature discusses it.

I called Senator Louden and we had a real nice talk about LB958, concealed and open carry and a few other things. I even received a neat letter from his office. This guy does not seem to like the idea of our rights being taken away or even dampened or watered down.

Senator Ashford changed the bill again, in what appears to be an attempt to disguise his true purpose: http://uniweb.legislature.ne.gov/FloorDocs/Current/PDF/AM/AM2235.pdf

It's still calling for a commission to make recommendations on banning guns, but he's hidden it inside all the other supposed functions of this commission. This guy is trying every underhanded thing he can to slip this bill through - now is not the time to let up. Keep contacting your senators.

Thanks to the guys at www.ccwne.com for finding this!

I emailed my senator just after finding out about this non sense. Havent got a reply yet. I am glad some of you are getting replies.

Your response to this was "Do you suggest we do NOTHING?"
I would have replied, "No. I suggest you ban tennis shoes, which are worn by a great many criminals during the commission of violent acts. It might not be any more effective than banning hunting rifles with thumbhole stocks, but it would be SOMETHING...and that's all that really matters, right?"

In protest of this LB958 making its way through this round of debate. I went to the gun store and walked out with a Remington R-15 VTR 223.

I did watch the debate on tv. My senator voted against it. but not enough others did so.

Chambers had his little speech on it. He started doing his ramblings that dont make sense, and he will always be a part of the omaha community and how he lives a block from the omaha mall, and how strong the NRA is and how bad the NRA is but after that it started sounding like he was going to vote against it. but then he said something along the lines of "I dont like this bill but I'm giving Senator Ashford a sympathy vote".
that isnt an exact quote.

Not yet. It passed the first round of debate, changes and voting. I know they voted for some amendment changes to the bill. then after all the non sense debating, it passed the vote. It now goes to another debate and vote.

Sadly enough, the impression I'm getting is that the NRA is calling this a draw because they got the language weakened. I hope they keep fighting this, otherwise they've sold us out.

Of what I seen on tv. There was alot of confusion about the NRA's opinion on it. Ashford said the NRA was for it since it will drop the handgun purchase permit, then all firearm purchases will be handled with NICS checks.

I dont remember which senator it was. who said he got a email about an hour ago during the debate. that said "the NRA is not for it or against it". but Ashford kept saying the NRA was for it a few days ago if the bill drops the permit to purchase law.

The NRA dropped their opposition to it after ashford agreed to do away with the purchase permit.... Typical NRA, compromising my rights away........ I don't mind the Permit- It's my I'm not a felon card.

Just posting an update on this bill.

On March 28th, It got voted down. Votes were 20 ayes and 20 nayes. A bill to 25 ayes to proceed any further. Which I think the next step was the governors desk since it had the emergency clause in it.

I didnt know it got voted on again untill I was reading the Omaha news paper at work last night that somebody brought in. The article was called Gun bill shot down in a blaze of ignorance. Don't remember the authors name but he basicly called every gun owner who was against it ignorant and stupid for following the NRA email to its members and by saying that they didnt read into the bill enough to understand what the bill was about. Also said that the Nebraska legislature is ran by big business and the NRA.

Robert Nelson is our papers resident LeftWingLoon ........... Gunscribe (of our home board) found some responses to his drivel at his last employer's (an "alternative" paper in Phoenix) equivalent of the Public Pulse:

Anybody else familiar with this guy? Any Phoenix Pholks here?

Now we need to make sure we stay on top of what Ashford's up to. I'm sure he'll try and sneak something in again. At least that lunatic Chambers is gone after this session.
