Is there a problem neck sizing belted brass? I've neck sized a few pieces that were shot in this gun and they seem to fit the chamber just fine. If I recall correctly, someone had mentioned that belted brass should be either partially or full resized using the Full Length die due to head spacing on the belt.

I used partial full length sizing for a 7mm mag. I had. I sized it to fit my chamber just if it had no belt, by slightly bumping the shoulder back just enough for the bolt to close. I never had any problems doing this, case life was as good as no belted cases. We shot quite a few "full house" loads too. Some people experience problems with the brass expanding just ahead of the belt. My chamber must have been tight because I never had any problems with that. There is a collet type die made that solves that problem.

You may can get by with neck sizing for a few reloads, but I think you'll have to size at some point unless you're loading 7x57 loads in the 7 mag.

Lordy, the B.S. some people pass off as knowledge. :fire:

Parker, forget what "someone" said, bottle neck cartridges should be sized to "headspace" (fit the chamber) off the shoulder; neck sizing does that very well and we are making reloads, not factory loads! Neck sizing ANY bottle neck case works quite well, at least for awhile. You will know when they need to be FL sized; they will get harder to chamber.

For FL sizing, it would be ideal if you get a Hornady case headspace tool to use on your dial caliper. Use it to measure a few fired cartridges from head-to-shoulder. You will probably find they vary as much as 3 thou, sometimes more. Use the longest fired length and set your FL die so the longest sized shoulders match the fired lenghts, no more than that. The fired cases have streched to the chamber length and shrunk back 1-2 thou so all you need to do is maintain that length in your reloads. Done that way they will chamber easily and will last the longest possible time without (much) hazard of a head seperation.

Good luck! :)

Thank You! It seemed strange to me that they would make neck sizing dies for this brass if it wasn't a good idea. The only problem I've encountered when neck sizing so far is with the Swiss 7.5 X 55 (only get 1 or 2 reloads before I have to Full length resize). Just find it hard to believe that there is a better place for "reliable" reloading information than here on THR.

I have owned a 700BDL in 7mm mag since 1980 and have only neck-sized brass for it (once the factory stuff was shot). I do the same for my 7-08, 7mm BR and 6.5 x 55. No issues at all
