Little new at this, so bear with me. I have acquired considerable "re=loaded" ammo. Have no idea what the bullet weight, or powder charge is. Was from a friends estate, and knowing him,, it was put together within the last year--but regardless. I am going to pull all the bullets, and dump the powder. Question is: after pulling the bullets (Collet puller) will I need to resize the necks prior to reloading with known data-NO, I,m not going to decap. Thanks,
G:confused:

I would, if for no other reason than neck tension uniformity when you reload them.

(I assume you are backing out the decapping assembly to where it
clears the primer when you resize?)

Your best bet in my opinion is to remove the decapping pin, and keep the expander set up to size as you normally would. This will ensure proper neck tension and hopefully reduce any run out put in by pulling the bullets.

My pop shot '06 milsurp ball and FJM rounds for nearly 30 years by simply pulling the FMJ neck sizing the case and seating a Sierra 150gr flat base. I could not tell you the numbers of deer that never knew the difference in those rounds and anything else they could have been hit with.

It's a shame to have to dump the powder completely did you ask if there were any log books or data he kept for his loads? At least it could be salvaged for other uses.

Sorry to hear about your friend. I have lost several who were great shooters and hunters through the years.

Yea, we looked everywhere for data sheets, soft ware, etc. I think its H-4895, as its all loaded in .308win. But thats just derived from some scribbled notes, and I can't substaniate it for sure. I'm tempted to just "shoot it up" as Carl was a pretty reliable reloader, but I've never hit the switch on a load I wasn't sure of--and I hate to start now. I'll just pull'em--that way I got a little private time to cuss at Carl, and remember 30yrs of tramping the woods.

Pull a couple and weigh powder and bullet. Probably a standard 308 load. Check his unfired brass. You knew the fellow, what he shot with, what kind of person he was. If somebody just handed me reloads I'd worry. Go with your gut.

I would measure a few after pulling them and compare with a resized one. I've pulled and reseated without re-necking and didn't experience any neck tension issues. But if your a little apprehensive about doing that then just give them a necking and call it good.

If you knew the guy, i'd pull a few, and if its close to what you'd load I'd blast em away. I wouldnt do that with a total stragers loads. However, if a friend of mine passed that I've shot with for years i'd end up shooting them.
