So I've had my m&p9 for about a month or so and I've managed to get my brother-in-law hooked on it and he's decided he's gonna buy something for himself now. I'm looking for some recommendations for some choices he could check out. His stipulations are it needs to be 9mm, roughly around $300, new (I know there are good used deals around but he is very set on these limitations), and American-made. Any ideas to throw at him since I'm just getting into the game and my knowledge is limited? I recommended looking at the S&W Sigma or Ruger P95.

I like my p95 snd it has ran good for me. I will suggest that you and the b-i-l go look at and fondle as many guns as you can to get an idea of what he likes. For what its worth I would only inform him of whats available and let him make the decision for himself so your not to blame when he learns what he likes in a handgun and what he has purchased does not meet those standards

He really needs to try some of the handguns he is considering to see what works best for him. I would also tell him that if he can move up his price target a bit that will open a lot more pistols into consideration and in the end he will be happier if he ever actually wants to shoot it from time to time.

The SIG SP2022 is a wonderful pistol and usually can be found for around $400 or maybe even less. The Beretta PX4 is something else to have him look at for a lower price pistol.

Thats an awfully low price point. Hopefully he is open to used? Even then he's limited but i'd say a Ruger P89 or 95. If he can manage another $100 he should have no trouble finding a used glock. If not tell him to be patient and wait for a good deal. I'd look for a LE supplier that also sells to the public. They often don't openly advertise so it may require some hunting around.

Check Ski's house of guns and Ross coin and guns. Both have always treated me well and have the best prices. That's a pretty Low price point but you should be able to find a Ruger P95 for around that.

4 words to end all doubts! GLOCK POLICE TRADE IN It just don't get much better than that in my book.

Let him go to the gunstore himself to see what guns really cost.

$300 is an ammo budget.

Even a well used, broken, duracoated pink, with missing sights, Glock 19 still costs more than $300.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. The price point is one thing I might be able to get him to budge on, maybe up to 500 since he loves my M&P so much. He is still very much set on only buying NEW and AMERICAN-MADE like I said earlier though, he wants the warranty and is a union man who refuses anything foreign made when he can help it. Still sounds like S&W and Ruger and maybe SA are the only American options though

Sportsman's Warehouse had a Kahr CW9 for $445.00 and a couple of used Glocks a month ago when I was in there. May want to take him in and talk to the older guy-dark hair and glasses. He had a new SR9 that felt pretty good to me.

I have to agree $300 is a tad low of a bar. But yea the ones reccomended so far that I agree are. Ruger Sr9, S&W Sigma or SD9, Glock Trade in. Best advice is find a place that does layaway and make payments. :D

The SIG SP2022 is American made - at least the new ones for sale. But since he really likes your M&P I think he probably should save up until he can get that. I can understand buying American BUT in this case his life may depend on what he can shoot best with.

Is that SA you are referring to Springfield Armory?

You do know the XD's are made in Croatia and their 1911's are made in Brazil.

Out of the two choices I would take the Ruger P95 over the Sigma, due to the lighter trigger.

If this is strictly a range only gun, has he considered a good .22lr? Save much more on ammo costs than the 9mm on any day.

Got some good advice on here so far, went out yesterday to every local gun store in town and picked up just about everything from Ruger, S&W and FNH among other great american built options. I've convinced him to move up to about 400 and he really loved the SR9, also saw a M&P9 carry/range kit for 500 that he might try to convince his wife to let him get lol. For some reason I just think he doesn't wanna copy me and get the same thing I have haha.

I really like he new M&P I've been playing with, but understand his wanting something different.

I think the Sig 2022 is a great gun and recommend them a lot, but prefer the German ones to the American ones. My next choice would be a Kahr CW9. Are you sure the FNH are American made?

In the Ruger line, I've had better experiences with the SR9 than the P series

I can't not recommend a M&P 9mm.

If he really likes that pistol, then that would be an excellent pistol to start with. Nearly a perfect first pistol if there ever was.

Are you sure the FNH are American made?

FNH has a manufacturing plant in Columbia, SC where they make the FNX and FNP series handguns (9mm, 40, 45). They also make the M-16 and other weapons for the U.S. military there. The parent company (Fabrique Nationale Herstal) is located in Belgium.

I used to own an FNP-9, the slide was engraved "Made in America".

Mikey I,

If he's only shot your handgun then he needs to try out a bunch of different ones to find out if your's is what fits him or if it's a Glock or 1911 or ...

Once he does he can look for a deal. Be warned that $300 may require him to be patient and to put in some work looking for a handgun that fits at that price.
