I go to uni in wales and some-one dibbed on me and security confiscated my cold steel bushman and a brand new axe. To comply with bloody laws here i am now looking for a small fixed blade knife less than 3 inches for use in woods and snowdonian mountains.

all tips would be appreciated

I read the thread and couldn't believe I responded to it without mentioning the Rosselli knives, then I saw the date!
My most carried and most functional all-around sheath knife is a Rosselli Carpenter's knife from Ragnar at ragweedforge.com

Right at 3 inches is the A. G. Russell Bird & Trout. These knives are great cutters. They start with a thinner stock than some and do a thin grind as well. You can get them in VG-10, ATS-34, AUS-8, and D2. They start at under $50.

Bark River Micro II, Micro Canadian Skinner, and Mini Skinner (all in A2) are under 3 inches.

Regards,
Greg

Mickey Yurco puts out some really nice blades around $100 that are super for covert carry. Also, if you can still get one, the Benchmade Snody (s30V) is a great little knife.

crkt and cold steel have a bunch of small fixed blades well under $70. i have crkt ryan model plan b, and i paid less than $30. they're discontinued, but you can still find them online. also, the dragon tooth (or claw?) and the falcon are very nice.

The Entrek Lynx looks pretty awesome: very small/sturdy in 440C. Costs around $85, so slightly less than a plate of curry and a pint costs in London.

I'm about to buy one in a couple weeks, can report back then. Been meaning to buy one forever, just haven't broken down and done so.

2 5/8" blade, 6.25" overall.

There's Always Puukko And Mora Knives From Scandinavia.

There's always Puukko and Mora Knives. There are alot of them that are about three inches, but they're sharp as hell. The Moras are way less expensive than the Puukko knives are, but the Puukko's are better finished.

One that I've liked for awhile.

Another one that's slightly different

RWF has good deals on both Mora and Puukko knives.

He also has these Lapin Military Knives that are about the right size.

These are the least expensive (Mora Knives/$12 to $14), but they're still good knives.

Then World of Knives has some Puukko Knives as well.

There are a plethera of good fixed blades in you length requirements. I see someone mentioned the scandinavian blades. Benchmade makes some good ones.

Also, How about a Boker Plus Subcom Fixed Blade, or a Boker Plus MPT? Chad Los Banos' designs may look unconventional, but they are great knives.

A.G. Russell also has a knife called the Woodswalker. It has a two and a quarter inch blade and comes with a leather pocket sheath. Cost is $19.95U.S.

+1.

I met Mickey at the Wolverine knife show year before last, and as well as being a gentleman, he makes some sweet "little" knives.

Thanks for your help everyone. I ordered one from ragweedforge for £15 that should serve my needs, and also saw a few presents for people while browsing. thanks again

bsu685,

Are you intending to keep this knife in your accommodation or carry it at university/out and about? If you intend to carry it about, except when camping/hunting etc you CANNOT carry a fixed blade regardless of length. University grounds and buildings are classed as a public place.

If you want to carry a knife in public (except for specific tasks like camping) you may ONLY carry a "folding pocket knife with a cutting edge no greater than 3" in length". You should also be aware that if a knife has a lock, it is de facto not classed as a "folding pocket knife" so in effect you may only carry a folding, non-locking pocket knife with a cutting edge no greater than 3" in length.

If you want it only for specific outdoor tasks like camping then you may carry any blade suitable for the task i.e. an 18 inch machete, a 4 inch bushcraft knife, an axe etc.

Apart from a few exceptions like balisongs you can keep and carry any knife at home or on private property. However, landlords (including universities) can restrict what you can keep in your accommodation.

i carry a knife as you described most places except when going to clubs etc. My new knife i will only carry to and from outdoor activities, and i will probably have a friend look after it, not keep it in the dorm. what annoys me about this whole fiasco is i am not allowed the cold steel bushman or the axe, but i am allowed a meat cleaver and a large carving knife. i mite jus go buy cheap ones of them to use to annoy the security people. God this country sucks sometimes

Perhaps you already have but it might well be worth explaining to the university what you want this equipment for, that neither item is designed or intended to be a weapon and that you are already allowed to keep kitchen knives. Usually landlords ban knives only if they are weapons - working knives shouldn't be a problem.

If you have no luck there, consider a Cold Steel 'special forces shovel' as an axe alternative. Also, Old Hickory kitchen (especially butchers) knives make fine outdoor knives. Both should be allowed in residence.
