Can anybody recommend a top-notch gunsmith that can removed a damaged barrel from a S&W Victory and replace it with a new surplus barrel (which I'll provide)?

Would prefer Illinois/Wisconsin/Indiana area, but will ship to the right gunsmith if it's too far to drive.

Shouldn't shoot rapid fire with a valuable collectors piece. Had a squib (factory ammo) followed by two quick non-squibs. Split the barrel and broke my heart.

Thanks for your help.

If you happen to be a trap shooter, come out to Tucson AZ for the Spring Grand, we can FTF and I can fix you up.

Shipping can be done, but any more it seens to cost as muc as the work on a handgun.

Gunsmith in Illinois

Hi BikerNut:

Oglesby & Oglesby in Springfield, IL, does excellent gunsmithing and might be within driving distance for you.
They don't have a formal website but their phone number is (217) 487-7100.

Hope this helps.

Gander Mountain-Kenosha, WI.

I don't buy much merchandise from them anymore but gunsmith dept. is good and used to be S&W warranty repair station.

BigEasy -- Thanks, I'll give them a call. It's about a four hour drive, but I have to go down there on business next month.

BruceM -- Good idea, but I just read yesterday on another forum that Gander Mountain just officially closed down all their gunsmithing services nationwide. The guy that posted this info was upset because he took in his 1911, and they gave him back a box of parts and a $75 bill.

To avoid any further disapointment, be sure the gunsmith you chose has the correct blocks to support the frame and barrel while unscrewing the barrel. Some just clamp the barrel between two pieces of wood, leather, or whatever - and then turn the frame by putting a long handle through the cylinder window. This can result in ruined gun.

Obviously this is not someone to leave your Victory Model with. :banghead:

The linked thread states that Gander Mountain was closing 90% of their gunsmithing operations. I would give them a call. That particular location has all the tools and equipment from the Wilmot, WI store, which was THE ORIGINAL Gander Mountain store and was attached to their distribution center back when they were mail order.
