Need a heavy duty range rod. Where to get?

Where are you you folks getting your range rods?

I need one for a Charleville musket.
None of the regular on-line BP vendors seems to sell one long enough.

Do you mean a ram rod for seating the bullets? I bought a 4' long 5/8" diameter wooden dowel to use as a ram rod for my Brown Bess musket. I know that there are brass end caps available to make your own from Numerich but I am happy just using a plain dowel.

I want a heavy duty range rod to use for cleaning/maint.

Brass or aluminum would be fine.

I have the ramrod that came with the musket but I'd like something with a good sized handle(T shaped or other).

Rod section needs to be 48inches.

Want it threaded 10-32 for attachments.

I picked up a 11/32nds stainless rod 4 ft in length up at Dixon's muzzle loaders years ago. One end was threaded for jags etc and the other end left plain to add your own handle. I use a plastic muzzle protector with it. And i mounted a 3 inch round wooden ball on the handle end. Pinned that two ways with steel pins. Stout enough to load/clean etc anything held to the shoulder.

When I was still employed, I made several from 3/8" Aluminum round stock.
One end is tapped 10x32 to acommidate the bullet seater, cleaning jags etc.
On the other end, a 3/4 x 5" long Aluminum hex bar is tapped 10x32 on the ends as a handle and through the center to make the rod into a "tee" handle.
On the handle end of course a 10x32 stud is installed.
I use these on all of my BP stuff and it works especially well on my inline.

Look around the "exotic" tables at a gun show. A MA Deuce rod would work well

Check out Cabelas, I bought a alum 35 inch with brass fittings in 45 and 50 Cal. That has a T handel. I am real new at Black Powder stuff, but this was recomened to me by some one that shoots a lot of BP. And it really works well for me. It was about $20.00 if I remember right. You can get a Dry Ball out with it or at least I have several times now. I really don`t know if I have a high enought IQ to shoot BP. I am begining to have real serious doughts. But it is alot of fun to shoot with the BP shooters at our clubs range untill I do something stupid again.

It's 44" but from a quick search maybe that wouldn't quite get to the bottom on yours. Maybe with the right style of jag it would just make it...

I was hunting 2nd to last day of muzzleloader, and lost my ramrod for my Hawkins. (3rd time). When I'm going through heavy brush, with rifle on my shoulder, it tends to get caught and pulled out. I finished the day knowing I was limited to one shot. On the way home, stopped at Rural King and Walmart to find one so I could hunt the next day. They typically run around $20. Walmart was bare. RK had range rods with a big T handle on the end that you couldn't carry in the gun. Finally I went into Lowes to find a dow rod to get me through the next day. As I go down the isle I see these bright orange driveway stakes they put in the ground to mark where the driveway ends to plow snow. They are like a fiberous plastic that is about indestructible, and about 5' long. They looked about the right diameter. I checked the price and at $1.99 I grabbed one. Cut it to teh right length at home and works great! Also will be easy to find if I drop it. The only thing is it doesn't have the threaded end, but I figured that since I've never had to run a path through it in the field before, I'd be good now. Also, if I put the metal capped end in first it is really hard to pull out.

October Country used to sell solid brass rods in 48" lengths, but I don't see any in their current site listing. They do sell a 48" Delrin rod in several thicknesses and with various threaded ends (including 10/32). Don't know how well Delrin will work as a range rod (too flexible?). They also have hickory rods 48" long in several thicknesses and end treatments. A good hickory rod should work, I would think.
