Cleaning Rod Question

Years ago when I acquired an 1861 Springfield rifle and then built a Pedersoli Brown Bess musket kit I bought several cleaning rods which were long enough to allow the jag to reach the bottom of the barrel. Fast forward to now, the longest rod which I never used) has a 12-28 male thread which matches up to absolutely NONE of my jags, bore mops, or patch holders I have, most of which have 10-32 male threads. None of the hardware or gun shops in my area have anything to adapt the rod to the useful parts so, since I have a lathe in my garage I figured I would make one. However, I cannot find a store that stocks 12-28 taps. Anybody have a suggestion? I thought about turning the end of the rod down and re-threading it to 10-32 but it is long enough that it would wobble due to the end hanging out of the headstock not being supported.

I wouldn't modify the rod if it was mine. I'd find an adapter, or just find a bunch of jags and odds and end that fit it correctly. must be out there.

Is this close to doing the job?
I go blind looking at all those. I look at Dewey's web page whenever I need adapters.
I don't buy their rods anymore. I buy Tipton fiber.

Thanks Russ. I looked at Midway but didn't see that. I did check my local Home Depot but they didn't have any 12-28 taps. My local Ace couldn't even order one although I did get a #15 drill bit for a tap drill. I already have a piece of bar stock chucked up in the lathe to make one but I don't have the 12-28 tap.

You should build an adjustable support stand for your lathe, a very handy accessory to have.

Your welcome. Pains me to buy what I can make too. In this case you'd pay more for the tools and you probably wouldn't use a 12-28 tap again.

In case it helps:

McMaster-Carr is a great place to find all sorts of stuff. Only thing is you never know what brand you are buying but it is always quality stuff. MSC Industrial Supply is handy for metalworking tools.

If you have a lathe it would be easy to make an adaptor to go between your 12-28 to 10-32 all you need is a piece of brass or aluminum rod then drill & tap each end.
I have done thing like that in my drill press.

Russ: The adapter was $3.99, the tap would have been at least $12 and you are correct, I probably wouldn't use it again. Most of the taps I have are left from my Die Maker days which ended in 1983.
