Good afternoon, I am in the market for a new rifle to give to a family member that is hiking etc up in Alaska. I was all set to get the 45/70 Marlin 1895 SBL with an 18" barrel when low and behold i came to realize they are sold out apparently nationwide.

Not being any sort of gun expert I would appreciate any advice or suggestion on a similar rifle that would work out. I like the lever action, shortened barrel and knockdown power the Marlin offered..can anyone offer some other specific ideas for a comparable purchase? (< $1000 preferably)

Thanks!

I live in Anchorage and was looking for a Marlin 45-70 Guide Model (the short barrel) a couple of days ago and found nearly every gun store I went to had them . . . I was price comparing . . . around $695 for the stainless and $615 for blued . . . .

Might be a little expensive for a gift, but check with Wild West Gun Shop in Anchorage. They make custom rifles for that exact application. Their website is:

Talk to Jim West. He's a very nice guy, and as you can see, they make some very interesting toys.

Another option might be a Rossi M92 in .454 Cassul. Plenty of power in a little bit lighter package. (less $$$, too) You can also get either a .44 Rem. Mag. or .45 Long Colt in a 16" bbl. STAINLESS configuration. I think with full power "carbine" ammo, a bear would be discouraged by someone using any of them.
