Need a new possum fighter in .17 or .22

I have never fired a .17 but I have heard some good things about them. I see there are a few kinds. What is the "best" all around? I will need a pretty accurate rifle and want semi auto. Price is a big factor. Are any of the .17 cartridges really much better than .22 LR? I have looked at 10/22s and I was looking for spending low $100s so that might be out. Its such a great gun though. There is the savage 64f, anything to say about that one? Id like a .22 PPSH but Im short on dough.
 
remmy's are your only choice in semi auto in 17 , i think. It is a good gun now, make sure you get one made after 2004. especially the mags. now the thing about the 17 is this, both the hmr and the m2 are going faster at 100 yds , than a 22 is at the muzzle. if you plan on keeping pelts, or taxidermy, or eating, go with the 17 m2. it is the best itchy getter ever made, in my opinion. the hmr, is good for absolutely blowing stuff up inside of 100 yds, so keep that in mind. Also the m2 is about 5 to 6 dollars a box, the hmr is about 3 bucks more.
you also have to buy all new cleaning equipment. If this is not what you wanna do, then go with a 22 mag, many more semi auto's of this out there.
 
though Im really just in it for the sport and the protection of my bird feeders, the M2 sounds better all around. Does Rem make a 17 m2 semi auto rifle? How much do they cost? I was thinking that if Im gonna spend more than $200 Id just get a kel-tel sub2k. That way I could have a home defense gun too. How is the .17 pmc?

How is the ARMSCOR AR style .22?

Depending on yardage, the 17m2 may be a bit slim for possum. A 22 mag is about the same cost to shoot and as stated already, the 17hmr is a few dollars more. You'll also find more cheap 22 mag semi autos out there. Marlin produces real inexpensive models. I have both 17's and 22 mags, but use each for different needs.
 
I know this is a total bummer but I'm just not convinced that the M2 is going to last. All the existing .22LR platform rifles and handguns haven't been reworked by the manufacturers to accept this ammo as was predicted. Although there is an academic difference between the .22LR and the .17M2 the practical difference is lost to most shooters. The .17HMR on the otherhand strikes me as having considerable longevity given that a great many .22WMR rifles and handguns simply were not as accurate as the similar .22LR offerings. Bear in mind that with rimfires you won't have the option to reload should either caliber get canned. If I were making the call, I'd go for the .22WMR or the .17HMR in that order.
 
im not sure but check marlin, they may make a semi in m2 now. I know majestic arms makes a fantastic break down, switch bbl in all 4 cals, but it is more money.
 
hmmm that marlin 717m2 looks right for me. How are those armscor AR things though?
 
Honestly, you need to fix your financial problems. I'm sorry, but you shouldn't be in financial trouble and also want a gun. A gun is an investment that should last a lifetime. My advice is to save up and buy a good gun... not a $100 piece or crap.
 
I dont have financial problems. I just bought a corvette actually. I just dont want to spend too much to fix a problem that isnt really much of a problem. 5mins ago I shot a squirrel that was eating my birdseed. But its with my first rifle, a single shot bolt action .22, and I am just looking for something more fun. I dont much care for the .22 for anything else. Im also trying to reserve a sig 556. If the Armscor isnt a good rifle, Ill probably get this AK I saw that costs a bit more. Its not that I cant afford much, I just dont want to spend much.
 
Well if you don't want to spend much you're not lilkely to get much either. At least when you are wanting a semi-auto .17HMR or .17HM2 If you will be satisfied with a decent semi-auto .22 LR, look no further than the Marlin Model 60 IMHO. Remington 597 has a certain following too, but some of them have some problems, at least according to Rimfire Central's posting population. I don't know for sure, don't have one of them. But we do have a Model 60. Great value there for certain.

That's about as wrong as it gets. Perhaps in scopes, but you can get a real quality .22Mag or LR rifle, semi-auto, for not much. For example, a Mossberg 352 semi-auto .22LR can be had for less than $150, and is a better rifle than many of the new rifles out there (hammer fired with a good trigger and walnut stock). Ditto for excellent condition Marlins, and even Remingtons if you look around. You can get a Mossy 640 Chuckster in .22mag for less than $150 as well.

Now, in the realm of .17 caliber rifles, I cannot comment. Yet with the .22, you can get some really good hunter-quality rifles for very reasonable prices.

One of the things that bugs me the most is when people quote PART of somebody else's post, like what just happened in Ash's post. Please read the entire post and refrain from taking comments out of context before saying someone is as wrong as it gets. :banghead:

The original comment I made, which I still believe to be accurate was that if you want a SEMI AUTO .17 HMR or .17HM2, and you don't want to spend much you won't get much.

There are indeed lots of good .22's out there and they are a lot more affordable as I believe I mentioned two specific examples.

P.S. I don't have any experience or first hand knowledge of the Armscor.
 
yeah the majestic switch bbls 22 semi's are out , i say them here at the last nra show. Also sako makes a quad bbl, but it is more money, and i cant remember if it is semi or not. though it does have a very novel approach to the scope, it has color coded rings for adjustment to match the bullet/bbl combo you are using, never having to change your sites to rezero... priceless. now the armscor, i have had one of there's in semi auto in a standard hunting model, with a 15 round mag. I liked it , it was very full sized feeling, and reliable.
 
Please forgive my mistake. And, you might want to stop banging your head against the wall, as it can lead to brain damage at the worst, and a headache at the best.

I was on the phone with Dino this AM. I asked about the MA-4 set-up and they will be in production mid to late summer. Pricing will be $1,100.00.
