Has anyone done this? I can get the new barrel, and bolt handle assembly for about $170. the .17 leaves the barrel twice as fast as the .22 LR. I'm assuming that the .17 hm2 case is the same dia as the .22 LR so that it will feed from the 10/22 mag.

Anyone have any thoughts? Good or Bad?

I think the conversion also requires additional "mass" in the form of a heavier
bolt handle and a stiffer recoil spring. I read in Outdoor Life that Ruger was
to start production of the 10/22 in 17 HM2; perhaps late this year.
My advice would be wait and get a factory rifle.

Thats why he said he could get the barrel and bolt handle assembly for $170.

IMHO its not worth the trouble of swaping the barrels out when you want to shoot different cartridges. Use that $170 to buy a bolt action 17HMR. That way you have a whole new gun that's more accurate than the 10/22 can be in a cartridge with more impressive velocity than the Mach 2.

Hello; I am going to reverse my advice. The factory 10/17 will be in short
supply; if it ever gets made. You can be shooting and enjoying your rifle
for 2 years before the ruger is available. So let us know how the conversion works for you.
I have 2-17 HMR rifles, and 2-17 HMR revolvers. The rifles will crater a steel
plate at 50 yards. The pistols will only make a shiny spot. I figure the 17 HMR Taurus 12" revolver will have a muzzle velocity similar to the 17 mach2
in a rifle. The cost of the ammo is close. I like the magnum 17.
