I have a pistol problem in my "gun safe".. ok, sheet metal lock box.. it keeps the kids and the honest out anyway...

I'm replacing the rifle rack thingies on the sides which is why it is pretty empty right now, the old ones were foam and started to decompose. I'm keeping the long guns out right now while the liquid nails sets, dunno what the fumes would do. To replace them I bought some horizontal fishing pole holders and did some surgery on them with tin snips.

What I am looking for:

It has good storage for long guns with 2 openings left, but I am stuck on pistols. You will see in the pic how I have them stored is not cool. I am looking for something to fit in the big shelf. The shelf is 8" wide, 9" deep, and as the shelves are set now 13" tall. I have 4 pistols and would like to be able to store up to 6 in there. Pistol types right now are a 2 3/4" N frame, a 4" security six, a single six with a 6.5" barrel, and a crossman C02 pistol that roughly is the same as a 1911 size wise. In the future I will probably get a normal sized automatic of some kind plus possibly a long barreled revolver.

Any ideas on off the shelf products to put in there or a design of something I could make? I'm not terrible at wood working.

Thanks!

Drawer slides with birch shelving with 1/2" square surround on top of each shelf forming a "lip". Use Sears Tool Drawer Organizer making cutouts for each pistol. The Sears stuff is a bit expensive, but i'm not sure of an inexpensive high-density non-static 3/8" - 1/2" think foam mat source anywhere else.

Birch because it's a sturdy, inexpensive hardwood. Or ceder would be a bit lighter in weight and make the safe smell purdy.

13" should be about 4 sliding shelves, 2 pistols each.
