Mods, if this is in the wrong category, feel free to move it.

I need a gun safe. My current firearms are 2 28" Remington 870 12 Gauges, 3 full size handguns, a 20" Winchester 94, 16" M4gery, and a single shot NEF 20 Gauge. I want something more sturdy than one of those thin steel cabinets, and I want enough room for my ammo as well as valuables (Title to my car, abstract of my house, etc...). The main problem is that I'm strapped for cash and will only have $500-600 to spend on it plus the extra couple hundred bucks for delivery/ installation.

So, whattaya guys think?
Can I get something decent in that price range?

Any and all suggestions welcome.

Thanks,
-Nick

Stack-On and Sentry make lower priced safes in 8, 10, or 16 gun capacity. Although finding one with enough shelf room for the handguns might be an issue.

Personally, I have one of the 8-gun stack-on metal cabinets because at $99 bucks it was all I could afford, and I needed something light enough to carry up a flight of stairs by myself. On the plus side, they sell separate handgun cabinets that you can mount on top of the long gun cabinets. It probably won't stop someone with the right tools and enough time and determination, but once you bolt them to the wall studs and floor it should be enough to keep out the average smash-and grab thief looking for a quick score.

I don't know what guage it is, but Tractor Supply had a nice safe (Cannon?) for about $600.00 the last time I was there.

Stack on safe is what I would buy if I was strapped for cash, or wait and save a few more months. I did purchase a stack on safe or metal cabinet for $89 at Dicks. This is the 10 gun capacity safe but is used strictly for the storage of ammo. You will regret it if you don't purchase a better safe. Save your money and get a good one. This particular is not suitable for gun storage as the racks for the rifles were stick on foam cushion which in my opinion would not hold a rifle in place.

Need a new gun safe

Cannon, Cannon, Cannon!!!!! The very best warranty in america, bar none. If some one burlarzied it , you get a new one , no questions . if you have a fire , its replaced also. Costco also sells them. any thing gos wrong they have you covered. I know for sure,I service them. I also service all other brands & have for 45 yrs, no other co has a warranty like cannon!!!! I've seen a bunch replaced after fires & buglary over the years. They are a solid co. I think they start around 550.00 ,don't know for sure, mine are many years old I'm just a safe tech & don't have a working knowledge on sales.. Good luck , nick5182 K&j 223

I think the safe that Sam's Club has is a Liberty Centurion and it is in the $600s. That's the lowest I would personally go. I look at it this way: Your gun collection looks like it might be worth, what... upwards of $3,000 or more? That M4 might have cost you more than what you're looking to spend on this safe. I've never regretted saving up more to buy better. YMMV

Cannon may have a great printed warranty, but getting them to back it up isn't always as easy as it sounds.

I'll search around later and edit my post if I find it, but I believe one of our very own forum members here had serious issues trying to get Cannon to fix a warranty issue.

**EDIT**

Here is one of them here:

well,.. I spoke to the operator over at Cannon just now. I tell her that I am leaving a message a day with the techs for almost 3 weeks, and nobody has contacted me...

she tells me to 'stop leaving messages' as the techs are too busy to deal with anyone as they have such a backlog of messages to listen to. Next she insists that every message will be replied to. I asked her how long the back log is, beyond the 3 weeks I am already waiting... she says 'I do not know.'

Most $600 safes aren't going to be much more secure than a $200 cabinet, or a $20 deadbolt placed on a solid core closet door. If you want to use a safe over the other options, Sam's, Costco, Bass Pro, Cabela's, etc. are the places to look for safes in that budget. Our local Lowes even sells some gun safes priced less than $600.

Does the Cannon warranty cover the safe or the contents---I could care less if they give me a new one if the contents from the previous one are gone---false security.

After doing a lot of window shopping online to familiarize myself with various prices and features I visited local locksmiths (within an hour drive) who specialize in selling safes to see what was available.

Ended up getting a nice one at a good bargain from Able Safe Company (appears to be a couple in your surrounding area according to google, you might want to give them a call). They had many models and manufacturers to choose from on their floor. They put it on my son in law's pickup truck, loaned me their equipment for the weekend (a ramp and special fork lift) and also gave me tons of advice (can't beat questioning a pro face to face). Installed it with the help of my son in law. Moving >1200lbs was scary, but it turned out to be easy as pie.

I think that was good way to go about it. No shipping or installation fees allowed me to get a larger, heavier, more secure safe. Definately get larger than you need because they have a tendency to fill up over time. Mine's pretty full now with various items after only about a half dozen years.

No safe company will warranty the contents as a general rule. There are a few exceptions to this, but these exceptions are usually pretty specific.

Well it's better than having to shell out for a new safe again.

So long as you carry a homeowner or renter type of insurance policy, chances are good that they will pay for the loss.

Able is a pretty common locksmith type company name, they probably aren't related.

They will be in business up until the point that they loan somebody their equipment and that person hurts or kills themselves.

Lawyers can't give legal advice unless you hire them. Doctors typically won't tell you how to operate on yourself. Professional safe guys may give advice, but they certainly aren't giving instructions and loaning out equipment. That is a serious liability issue.

This is the Cannon 24 rifle safe. It's $699, not the $600 I remembered.

They may be pretty liberal in their stated warranty, but say they'll repair or replace it after a fire, flood or break-in. In any event, that seems generous. I have no personal experience with them.

+1 on what Kentucky said.
Originally looking at a 17cf safe thinking I would never fill it up. Everyone told me that same thing about buying next step up. Well, I did one better and went 3-4 steps up and got a 50cf, and 1yr later, it's now filled. Bad thing is you get an itch to fill all those empty spaces with new guns/rifles

Most homeowner policies do NOT cover guns for full value. If they cover them at all, it will have a cap around $2500. You can buy a rider or find one of the companies that DO insure guns.

Whatever brand you get, you should plan on buying one that hold at least 50% more than you currently have or intend to have.

They are actually called "Residential Security Cabinets" as "safes" have a T rating against a skilled burglar with tools - typically rated at 15 or 30 minutes.

A heavy secure box, bolted down and to wall studs will deter most of your "smash and grab" kids
