Need a scope for my new savage

I just put a Redfield 4-12x40 on my AR and sighted it in today. So far, impressed. The clicks are not as loud and positive as some, but once you get the feel of them they are fine. And you should have to use them a few times anyhow.

I'm newer to scopes, but the only issue I had was when I had it up to 12 with my glasses on, the crosshair was blurry, but the target (25 yards) was blurry. When I removed my glasses, it was the opposidte. I am near sighted and have astigmatisim in my shooting eye. I presume this would be the same with any scope though.

I compared Nikon Buckmaster, Monarch and the refield side by side, and the clarity btween them was very close. The Refield has slightly smaller exit pupil then the Nikons, which makes the sweet spot on the scope where you have full field vision through it a little smaller, but the Buckmaster 4-12x40 was also $330 +, Refield 4-12x40 was $219.

Overall, very happy with the Refield this far. Generaly $50 or so cheaper then the Buckmaster. If you want to do long range hunting/target shooting, get a 4-12x40. If you are doing deer hunting a 3-9 might be better. Most people I know say the have a 3-9 for hunting and never take it off 6. If that's the case, I don't see how an extra 3x mag could hurt, especially if you want o make long shots.

I have Bushnells from Banders and sportsman to the elites all the way to the 6500. In fact all my scopes pistol and rilfe are Bushys. I have not had one failed yet out of three pistols and 5 rilfles. So least to say Im a fan....

I am a big fan of the mid-price scopes (OD color in Maverick's post or those homer mentioned). I most recently have come to appreciate the value from the Bushnell scopes after getting a 4200 6-24x40. I have a 3200 10x coming soon and use a 2-6x32 on a .44 mag. I can't afford any of the >$500 stuff but I got rid of Tasco/Chinese crap a while back. Burris, Nikon, Bushy have all served me well.

Also, if you don't mind a slight gamble, scopes (like guns or cars) take a hit when they "drive off the lot" so there are a lot of good deals on quality, excellent condition scopes on the forums.

Rightly so, I would say that the best value is in that section and the green range. For every significant step up in quality past that point you have to pay significantly more, and to be perfectly honest those type scopes will provide more than enough glass quality and features to perform just about any task that the average hunter requires.
