Need a SS .22 beater...your favorites?

MCgunner: Just out of curiosity, what would it take for you to part with your Rossi 511?

Ain't for sale. Had a hard enough time finding THIS one. :D Thie things are truly accurate. The ONLY criticism I have of it is the DA trigger, which is rough compared to my Tauri and Smiths and Rugers past and present, but it's a .22. I don't NEED DA in a .22 revolver, not like I'm going to use it for self defense. If I had to, though, I can control the DA, it just ain't real great. The up side, the SA trigger is pretty awesome.

Eee GAD, 400 bucks? Whew! I'm not thinkin' they've gone up THAT much. Hmm, don't know, just seems high. I did pay 200 for mine probably 12 years ago, though, but figured I was gettin' skinned a bit. I just WANTED it, though and figured it was worth a solid 150 anyway at the time.

MCgunner that seller has 4 pages of guns for sale and only one item has been bid on. I suspect at the price he has on it it will for sale for a long time. For that price plus all the shipping I would buy the Ruger SP 101 and never look back.

Just a few years ago I bought a S&W model 34-1 in a pawn shop for $250.00 OTD door. I really don't think they knew what they had.

To the OP you can keep a blued gun from rusting quite so quickly but waxing them with Johnsons Paste Wax. I have guns I waxed years ago that I handle and they never rust.

I have a 6" Ruger "Standard Model" .22 auto I bought new in 1964. Kept oiled you would not know it has been used on a commercial fishing boat. Now I use Birchwood Casey "Barricade" for rust protection and it seems to do very well.

When someone says "a beater" I think of the old RG chrome plated cowboy pistols. They were reliable, cheap, had plastic grips that needed to be tightened after every outing and had to have the front sight bent before the gun could hit anything! They were great because they had the same weight and feel as the toy cowboy gun I had when I was a kid. Only I didn't get a metal badge with the RG. But then, my toy gun didn't shoot real bullets!

That's a beater. An SP-101 or a Single-Six...well, you have to be pretty well off to use those as beaters! That RG wasn't as crappy as the garbage revolver that Hinckley used to shoot Reagan. It was better than that. And it wasn't an unattractive revolver. But it seems the feds have outlawed all the good, cheap guns that used to grace the shelves of pawn shops nationwide.

And remember those Jennings? And the Ravens? I wish I'd bought a dozen of each when they were available! I have a Jennings J-22 that fires as reliably as any other gun I have. The only difference is that I have to use a toothbrush to clean out the muck every four magazines. When it's clean, it's a great defensive pistol.

The Ruger Single-Six has replaced that old RG. But it's no beater. If I needed a beater today, you know what I'd get? I'd find an old Mark I Ruger Standard Auto with almost no bluing on it and at a cheap price...something I could oil up with BreakFree and leave in the trunk of a car with a couple of boxes of ammo.

Anyway, these are my ideas of beaters. Others may vary!

You may be better served buying a police turn in .38 stainless for $250. or so.
Most of them come with pre-beaten finishes for you and a few more scratches will only add character...:)
However the insides are usually clean and tight. Loaded with wad cutters they're infinitely more fun than a .22 pop gun.

As the OP I can see what I mean by "beater" and what other call a "beater" might not mean exactly the same thing.

My definition was (in this situation) a .22 revovler that I can use a lot without having to oil it after every use. I already have a beater .22 pistol...a Phoenix Arms semiauto. Little investment in that old gun. I barely ever have to clean it. Kind of nice to have a "lazy man's gun". Just looking for something simular in a .22 revolver.

The bluedHR I mentioned was old, but looked almost brand new. Loved shooting that old girl, but if I forgot to wipe it with Remoil after use small rusty spots would appear on it's finish. I'm real particular, usually, about cleaning firearms. Figured a SS equivalent would be less maintanace.

BTW, loved that SS Rossi posted earlier too. Already have a blued .38 Rossi and love to shoot it too. That .22 SS deal would be perfect for my backyard plinking. I will keep my eyes pealed for one of those too.

Not that there's anything wrong with a .22, but if you reload your own ammo, it's possible to reload a .38 (or .357) for about the same price as buying commercial .22 rounds. Currently, .22LR ammo is going for about $2 for a 50-round box of the Remington or Winchester promo stuff in 500 round bricks. That works out to be about 4 cents per round.

I've handloaded my handguns most of my adult life, cast for them. But, a man never outgrows the .22LR. I own a few, love shootin' 'em. They always get fired on a range trip and not just to save money.

My Rossi 511

This is a great "beater." I had my S&W 63 stolen and with the insurance money bought two of these rather than have one 63! One went in my safe and I shot the other. Just recently I gave one of the 511s to the daughter of a friend and she loves it! So my other 511 is waiting to be shot this autumn! The first 511 was a sweet shooter and they're incredible!

My 'lil Beretta 70S .22LR. It was hard chromed by
Mahovsky's...great job. The gun is a little spitfire!

AMTLightning_2.gif

The incredible AMT Lightning was actually better than
the original when they worked! Target trigger, target
sights, target grips and all sorts of bells and whistles.
Ruger sued them and I managed to keep one. It would
be a fabulous competition gun as it looks like a gun-
smith has worked this over!

Confederate,

Those Rossis would be perfect for a revolver....beater. Like I said, I have a Rossi snubby and like it already.

I used to have one of those Berretta 21A's but sold it. Wish i'd kept it.

For a semiauto, that Beretta 70 series would be nice too. I think I read that Beretta no longer makes that though. I was looking online at those a couple of years ago and I seem to recall they made those with an even longer barrel than the one you pictured. Would love one of those. Just a cool looking little gun.

Bayou,

I did handle one of those Taurus at the LGS the other day. Looks like a decent revovler. Kind of heavy, but looked nice.

I saw a really nice stainless Ruger Sp101 with an 8 shot 22lr cylinder at the shop a few days ago. They wanted $369 for it, and I must admit I was tempted.

Bayou,

The one I saw at the LGS had a slightly shorter barrel than the one you posted a pic of. :D
