I picked up a used TC Renegade .54 at the flea market this past weekend. Upon bringing it home and scrubbing the bore, it looks to me like the bbl is kaput. Visible rust and pitting down the whole length. Couldn't really see this at the time of sale, but I don't regret the purchase considering what I paid. I know that Green Mountain offers replacement drop in bbls. I am wondering if TC offers bbls for sale, and if they are a better bargain than the Green Mountain barrels at $175+/-. This will be a plinker, and maybe a deer hunter depending how I like it.

There is a message that appears on the TC website when I tried to access fox ridge outfitters.com, the TC custom shop for muzzle loading barrels:

FOXRIDGEOUTFITTERS.COM
Fox Ridge Outfitters website is temporarily unavailable, you've been taken to their affiliate site www.tcarms.com. Please take a few minutes to visit here. To contact Fox Ridge, call 1-800-243-4570, they'll be happy to assist you.

From what I recall, their TC barrels are not cheaper than the GM barrels, but they are shorter and may fit better without any problems.
But you need to check if they are the QLA barrels with the false muzzle.
Not many people prefer the QLA for loading patched round balls.

Interesting. The GM bbls are advertised as drop in. Is there normally much fitting that needs to be done? I'm not much of a gunsmith, more of a parts replacer than a fitter.
Thanks for the TC info. I plan on calling them tomorrow. Was hoping for a little free advice tonight before making the call.:)

Chuck, I replaced my T.C. barrel in my 50cal. Hawkins with a G.M. barrel. It was the drop-in replacement barrel,I think I ordered it from Cabelas. All I had to do was pull the pin and drop it in,no fitting nothing to do.Came with sights, rod, ready to go.Best money I ever spent on Blackpowder shooting!

By all I have read around the 'net, the Green Mountain seems like the way to go. Nothing but praise for them here, rave reviews on Midway. Midway has pretty fair prices on them. I'll call TC tomorrow, but it's looking like a GM right now.

I've read about a fitting problem or 2 with some GM drop in barrels for TC guns.
Sometimes the under rib needs to be trimmed a little bit which is very minor. But I've also read how about how some folks can't seem to get their hammer to properly line up with the nipple, although that's not too common.
It might mean having to purchase a new hammer and fitting or bending it.
Maybe the barrel can be sent back if that happens.

No, not yet. I just assumed that it wouldn't perform due to it's condition. I suppose it wouldn't hurt to try her out, would it?

A wire brush, then some solvent, and some effort, may clean it up. A normal barrel can take a fair amount of rust before it's lost if you put the effort into it. I've gotten some guns cheap that way, knowing I could clean a rusty barrel up, but I have avoided ones I knew would never be any good.

For 50 and 54 Roundball shooting I would go with the T/C 1x66" bbl.

But if you want to step up in power go with the GM 1x72" .58 cal bbl for the Renegade

GM should also have a smoothbore in 61cal.

The .58 cal is a great hunting Roundball gun.

TC bbls have a better finish.

I spoke with TC; they have replacements in stock in both twist rates. They are about $10 more than Green Mountain.
So far as cleaning it goes, I did use a bronze brush and solvent. BP rusted bore damage is new ground for me, but it looks pretty beat up in my opinion.

The .58 sounds like fun. What type of accuracy can one expect from patched round ball. I hunt all wooded areas, so most of my shots will be within 100 yards.

The .58 roundball is a shooting machine, you will not be able to blame the gun if you miss.

If you want to get some great advice on rounball technique go to muzzleloadingforum.com

Here is one of the first 50yd groups from my TC .58 Green Mountain Barrel

Have fun

The same seller has several barrels for auction and may have more that are not listed. These are new barrels from Fox Ridge Outfitters - I know, I bought several from them at the same time this guy did. Mine are all gone.

Did some reading on muzzleloadingforum.com, found a few fellows that recommend a good scrubbing with WD40 to clear out the rust. I did this, and discovered that the the first inch or so of rifling is gone from the muzzle. I've found a few deals on .50 caliber bbls, but I really want a .54. I'll see what else I can stir up of the internet.
Incidentally, I ran across a great article on Beartoothbullets.com about firelapping muzzleloaders. Based on the results posted there, it seems like a must do upgrade. Anyone here experiment with this?
