OK, I currently have $800-1000 to spend on guns (I can go to $1000 or even a bit more but I'd like to keep it closer to $800). There are several guns I want. However, I am currently looking at a few options job/school wise and depending upon what I pick this might be my last gun purchase for as few as 2 months or as long as a year.

I have most of my basic bases covered already for handguns so it is primarily for fun (though I don't have an "ideal" CCW auto, a lightweight snub to go along with my Taurus 85, a large bore revolver, or a pocket pistol). I have a few strong rifle wants/needs but I rarely get to the rifle range (I only make it two or three times a year). Sure, if I get a nice rifle or two I might make it more, but I probably should wait until I start making it more often before I pay the money for a nice rifle. I also am in need of a shotgun (I don't currently own one).

Well, I am thinking about three broad possibilities (with the details mentioned below all being guns I strongly want, some of which have been put off for as long as a year or two). I might wait a month or two to save a few hundred more so I can get an M1A or Valtro (both guns I strongly want, but again I could still wait for them). I might spend the limit on something nice now (I don't have anything now that cost more than $500, something nicer to compare might be nice). I may use the $800-1000 to buy two or three less expensive guns that I'd like (there are some nice guns in the <$500 range and this option would cover more bases).

Some of the specifics (in case those will help in your answer) I'm considering are:

Save another month or two:
-Valtro
-M1A
-high end FAL
-nice O/U (OK for HD, good for informal fun, will allow me to get into skeet/trap)
-Kimber CDP (probably a 4" or 3")

Buy one nice gun now:
-HK USP
-HK P7 (if I can get a nice one for under $1K)
-used Kimber CDP (again, probably 4" or 3")
-Kimber Pro Carry
-SA 1911 Loaded
-basic Bushmaster (or similar quality) AR15
-basic, but decent, FAL
-Garand
-Python if I can find a nice one under $1K
-Kahr K or P 9

Buy two or three less expensive guns:
-NAA Guardian in .32
-Beretta Tomcat
-Taurus 850 or 85 in aluminum or titanium
-Taurus 905 (new 9mm snub)
-S&W 642 or (less likely) 637
-Taurus PT 911
-used BHP
-another CZ varient (probably the compact, SA or used PCR)
-Ruger Mini-14
-cheap AR 15 or Armalite AR 180 (~$600-650, I might be able to add a used wheelgun)
-3" K-frame (to go along with my 3" S&W 65LS)
-S&W 908, 3913, or CS9
-Kahr K or P 9 (plus a used revolver)
-.41mag revolver (S&W 57 or 58 or Taurus Tracker)
-Vaquero
-.45LC DA revolver (probably S&W 25)
-Lever carbine in .357 and/or .44mag (could use at pistol and rifle ranges)
-M1 Carbine (could use at pistol and rifle ranges)
-Taurus 445 or 450 (.44spl or .45lc snub)
-Charles Daly 3" 1911
-SA Mil-Spec (either full-size or compact)
-18" or 20" Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 pump shotgun (for HD and fun at the range, with an additional barrel I could also learn skeet/trap)

There are more, but that gives a good idea of what I am considering. I am having a very hard deciding even on the basic idea (one gun now, one gun but save and get an even nicer gun, get a few decent guns that fit more than one niche) let alone the specific gun.

I thought I was leaning towards the one nice gun now (primarily the P7, used CDP, Garand or AR) but I'm strongly thinking about two or three "lesser" guns now instead (there are several on that list that I've wanted for some time). Another factor is that if I knew I'd make it to the rifle range enough to make it worth it (and if I had $1200-1500) it would primarily be between the Garand and M1A. Of course, I don't make it to the rifle range often, and since my favorite gun is my Win 30-30 I'm not sure just adding a really nice rifle will change that.

If I knew I'd be buying several more guns in the next year it wouldn't be so tough, but since it is possible this might be my last for as long as a year it is a tougher decision. I'd greatly appreciate your feedback and advice.

I'd rule out mouseguns since MD isn't a CCW state, IIRC.

Were it me, I'd go w/ an M1 carbine and a BHP.

The only way you will be happy is to buy what you want don't compromise
That is the problem, just about everything I listed is on the top of my list (believe it or not that is just a partial list from my "must have list", they are the ones I want most). The "cheap" guns aren't substitutes for the nicer guns. It is only a matter of what I put off 'till later (again). The plus with the cheaper guns is that I put off a few fewer, the plus with the nicer guns is that I don't have a top drawer gun yet (I love my CZ 75B and Win 94, and I have some nice S&W revolvers but I don't have the BHP, Bushmaster, HK quality guns to experience).

True, but I am in the process of getting a FL non-resident permit which is good in PA (where I spend a fair amount of time) plus I may eventually actually leave MD. Hey, it is unlikely, but maybe MD may even eventually go CCW and I may as well be prepared.

I have faced the same dilemma when I picked up my Para Ord Carry .45. It was going to be that or a Marlin Lever action and a CZ75. Since the Para was on sale, it became a first choice, and because I really had no high end (paid for) guns (my USP was only $469).

It really depends on what prices you can find. If you bought used, you could get one of the P7 PSPs floating around for $600 and a USP from CDNN for $400, that's two of the nicer guns you had listed.

Since you don't go to the rifle range that often, I would put off the rifle until time or scheduling lets you do it more often. I thought I would go more often once I built my AR, but I have only gone once since I have had it since about March I believe.

And even though I didn't pick up that Marlin Lever Action, I picked up a Ruger lever action that I can shoot at the indoor handgun range without a problem, for only $200 during a sale.

I would suggest waiting to see what prices you can find. If you select one item to buy now, you might find a sale later that would have allowed you to buy two items for the same price.

Well, at least for now I've decided to go with the nicer less expensive guns (~$500 range). I've just bid on a nice, vintage 1963, S&W 57 on Gunbroker. I've wanted, but put off, a .41 mag for too long. I also am still on a bit of a wheelgun kick I guess. If I don't get it I'll probably try for another .41mag or maybe a .45LC (also maybe a .44mag)- I need a big bore.

For the second gun, I have no idea. Another 3" K-frame would be really nice as would one of the S&W 642s that are on sale out there. A lever rifle in .44mag or .357mag would be really nice too. Really, anything on my earlier "2-3 gun list" would be nice. I also might save a month or two and get one of the cheaper "1 gun only" list guns (probably the Kimber Pro Carry, but the SA Loaded, a Garand, or a used P7 would be high on that list too).

I'd suggest getting the Mossberg 500 or even an 88 for the second gun. You've already stated that you don't as of yet have a shotgun and would like one for HD, GP, and skeet. Buying a second wheelgun to go with the Model 57 ain't gonna get you on the skeet range. Besides, a new 500 can be had for around $200, a used one $150. An 870 can be bought for an additional $50 in most places. Either way, that should leave plenty of money for ammo.

Just my opinion, and it's only worth what you paid for it.
