ive had a vanguard and a howa. the vg2 is a little nicer that a standard 1500, and comes with a nicer stock.

TheM70 is one of the few majors Ive done not but shoot.
I dont care for the safety, otherwise i really liked the ones I played with.

honestly i dont think the m70 is a BETTER gun, but it offers different features.

Yeah another choice is Ruger rifles..

Certainly my choice for an affordable, "Mauser-style", bolt-action rifle. I like the controlled-feed, three-position safety and "classic" configuration on most Ruger Model 77/MKII/Hawkeye rifles. Mine have been consistently accurate, tough, dependable rifles that I've counted on in many an adverse circumstance. Icing on the cake is Ruger's well-deserved, stellar reputation for superb customer service.

I have CRF / Claw Extractor rifles of various designs and makes, including an FN SPR (model 70)

All will single feed a top loaded round.

One of my CRF rifles has never seen a mag fed round. Nary a one of the +3,500 rounds has failed to chamber

Interesting my .300 Did just fine. I wonder if some have more space than others.....Ive actually never run into a CRF that you couldnt do that with, but I also havent tried it on that many, just the ones ive owned.
That was the first thing I tried. Tried it a couple times in fact, and just succeeded in jamming the round in the chamber even further.

Had this happen on two Ruger 77's (one a 7x57 and the other a .280). Sold them both not long after that. Maybe a user-error, but if that's the case then I have no business owning CRF rifles. LOL

Get another, 3rd time’s the charm! :)

Has Howa has removed the hideous Ruger-esque warning from the barrel? (I notice the LSI catalog doesn't show the left side of the gun...anywhere) If not, I'd go Weatherby. Actually, I'd go Winchester...right now.

I did a bit of research last night, after going out and trying it with the only crf i still have. It worked find on my Arisaka....
BUT from what I was reading there were at least a few people with Rugers that did not want to do it, even tho they are supposed to be tapered to jump the rims with no help.

Same goes for other modern crfs....again what i gleaned from my limited research.

It was always my understanding that CRF's were designed to jump the rim (why wouldn't they be after all, since not doing so could lead to disaster in a dangerous game scenario). I've had other CRF's way back when (original Mauser actions) and I never recall having that problem. Those two Ruger 77's were the first time I experienced it. The first time it happened, I had no way to get the round out, so I had to drive to town and buy a cleaning rod and destroy the aluminum threaded piece in the process, just to get back to shooting.

Anyway, just beware of this if you're shooting Ruger 77's and have a habit of feeding singles at the range or dropping one in the chamber so you can close the bolt over a full magazine in the field.

Ruger 77 actions are one of my all time favorites but I doubt I'll ever own another for this very reason.

I seem to recall reading somewhere that the original Ruger M77 rifles were not true CRF even though they looked like they were. Is that correct or do I have a hole in my head?

Yep. Prior to the Mark II's, push feed with a 'Mauser-style' extractor that does jump the rim...always. Never had an issue with the one's I own.

Early mauser actions don't have room to do the trick on, even with the extractor made to slip over the rim.

I have been shooting bolt guns for 45 years....only ever saw a push feed fail once....now it was on a side hill with a 280 Remington in Pennsylvania after the 8 point was already dead......

....good it wasn't on Kodiak with a pissed off big boy coming at us.....
