I had a weird situation today. I am in sales and was recentley helping a very good customer. We started talking and I found out he was into the same hobbies as me (Knife collecting, Gun collecting etc.) Anyways I gave him kind of a real general price on a stereo system and I walked him. He ended up buying on line some of the equipment and sent his son in to pick up the rest. I gave the son a hard time time about the situation and told him that I would have given his dad a better deal on the stuff he got he should have just told me that I was over shooting his budget. I showed the son what the deal would have been. Well his son gave him a hard time.

Well today he sends his daughter in to pick up a couple of final pieces for the system, but calls first. He tells me what he needs and he also tells me that she has something for me to check out. and that was it. So I open the box and there is a Brand New Randall Made #14 7 1/2 like this:

I tell the daughter that it is a beutifull knife. I assume it is new and he simply wanted me to look at it. I tell her its great. She says "My dad told me to leave it with you." So I said thanks. Now I do not know what to do. Was it a gift, should I give him a call and say thanks? Or am I just holding it? Or does he want to sell it as he knows I collect? We were so busy at the shop that I did not get a chance to call him so I am going to call him first thing tomorrow. Let me know what you guys think. Thanks Juan

Juan,

The appropriate thing to do is call him and tell him what a wonderful knife it is (you do know it's a WONDERFUL knife, right?). Then tell him that now that you've seen one "in the flesh" that you'll certainly start working towards getting one of your own some day and that you'll keep his safe for him until he comes to pick it up.

Sounds like a good plan to me. I'd call him ASAP - I wouldn't want the hassle of keeping up with it if it's not mine. Is the backorder still close to 4 years on those? Yikes...

I agree. Assume that he just sent it over for you to look at, and ask him if he wants to come in and look at any more stuff and get his knife back.

Now, if he actually meant to give it to......nah, just couldn't be.

WOW congrats. It's beautiful. Dang, maybe I need to rethink my career and start doing sales (tried when i was younger, but couldn't make a living at it). Congrats to you!
