when it comes to tac/shooting equipment, and in general purchasing options, 99% of the time I live by the motto:

Buy Once, Buy Nice;
Buy Cheap, Buy Twice.

However, a few of my most recent purchases where I have strayed from my fiscal ideals have been in the area of hearing protection.
In the past year, I have been through 3 pairs of electronic hearing protection. Once, the mfg, replaced the faulty pair. The replacement pair soon followed the first pair and, in the professional quality control world lingo, "crapped-out."
In truth, I was never really pleased with any of the sets because they were too big, too heavy, useless on a windy day, sat too low on my head and interefered with my cheek weld, and though they "amplified" the safe sounds, those sounds sounded rather artificial (which, to a degree, they were).

I am now looking to buy a new set of hearing protection. It does not have to be an electronic ear muff type, just something that is excellent.

A few things:
- Tools are created to meet a certain end, or perform a certain function. During the course of meeting these ends, a 'good', or well-made, tool will handle the incurred strain and usage placed upon without comprimising its performance.
- I do not neglect my tools, such as leaving them outside or throwing them around. Nor do I use them for purposes for which they are not designed, like the guy I saw who used the butt of his shotgun to drive a loose rivet back into a duck blind.
- I do push my tools to their designed limits. Not needlessly, or haphazardly, but I do utilize them to the fullness of the task which they were designed to accomplish.

If you have any ideas or recommendations of what I should look into, please let me know. It is one thing to buy a 80$ pair of earmuffs without recommendation, it is another to spend money on a pair you hope will last a few years.
Also, in offering your advise, please let me know if you actually own the item you are recommending, if you've used (but do not own) the item, or if you've just heard great reviews. I welcome all advise, I just want to know the experience you've had with the item.

Thanks,
SjF

I have these and I like them if I am shooting pistol:

They are very comfy and offer a lot of protection. However they are a bit clunky for shooting rifle. When I shoot rifle I use plugs and some sometimes thinner Caldwell muffs I don't particularly care for.

For the most part I think cheap $3 a dozen foam plugs from CVS are more convenient and offer more protection than anything else if you are shooting rifle. There are places that make custom plugs but I havn't tried them.

I made the investment in good ear pro after hearing loss almost cost me my job. I decided I needed to get serious about keeping what hearing I have left. I opted for MSA-Sordin Supreme Pro X's. I added the gel ear cups, and they're comfortable to wear for long periods, cut out the bad stuff, and the response time is great (no clipping). I've had mine for about a year, and have no complaints.

I have the Peltors and have used the Impact Sports. When the Peltors die I'll replace them with the Howard Leight Impact Sports. I do wear plugs under my muffs.

I have a rule to only purchase hearing protection from well established safety equipment manufacturers and had been well served by following this (although I did test and do use the Surefire plugs). As a Safety Manager at my company I won't let our folks use "cheap" equipment regardless of what it costs.
