I have this rifle that was given to me. I found out that it is a 27 caliber, but it's a wildcat. The ammo would have to be special made or I'd have to reload all the time.

I was thinking about building a long range rifle out of it. The only thing is that it is a long action and I'm not that familiar with Long action rifles. If it were short action, then a 308 it would become.

So what do you guys suggest? And where do I start looking for stuff like stocks and bull barrels?

By the way, its an old Hawa action.

BCPerry;

I'd suggest finding a reputable gunsmith in your area. Then have him do a chamber casting to determine just what wildcat you've got. Once you know that, it's possible to determine what you want to do. For instance, if the barrel is .277", the action is long, and the chamber isn't bored to something that precludes it, have it reamed to .270 Winchester.

I'd personally learn bout the existing chambering and give that a whirl

My thoughts too.
If you plan on a long range rifle you`ll need to load to get the most from the rifle anyway.

I'm scratching my head to know why someone would make a long-action wildcat in .27 that ISN'T a .270. Oh well, someone did it. (My main hunting rifle is a Howa/S&W 1500 in .270.)

It could be a wildcat that can be easily loaded with brass from another cartridge. (I'm thinking like .22 CHeetah/.243/.308.) Once you know what it is, you'll know exactly what your options are. If it was ME, I would first decide if this wildcat is worth the trouble, if it ISN'T, I would ask myself which long-action cartridge I want that I don't already have. '-06? Check. .270? Got it. I guess I need a .25-06. Match up the bolt-face and barrel for it.

I see 2, 270 wildcats listed in the 6th Edition, Cartridges of the World, Frank C. Barnes et al:

The 270VJR, a silhouette cartridge formed from the 5.6x50mm Rimmed.

The 270 Savage, based on the 300 Savage.

The 270 Savage would seem to be the more popular.

I agree to finding out about the existing caliber before doing anything. FWIW,the .308 Winchester works very well in a long action. You can shorten the magazine if you like but it works well as is.
