Hello folks,

New to THR, but have been on other forums.

I am a Wisconsin resident moving to a CCW state for law school. I've put away some money, let go of some acquisitions from my Swedish mauser collection, taken the CCW class, and am excited about the right to defend myself and my lovely new wife.

I shoot IPSC, IDPA, etc, with my Glock 17 and Sig 226 9mm. I have been doing a lot of reading about good CCW sidearms and am not afraid about paying extra (reasonably) for quality. I am partial to 9mm (though I do like the 45acp... don't like the 40s&w) for its cost and a lower recoil for my wife (she took the CCW class as well and would be interested only in 9mm).

I am keen on the HK P2000, either in DA/SA or LEM V1 (5lb constant trigger pull). Also up for consideration, HK USP compact, G19. I've never shot a HK p7m8, but I've heard great things (never minding the price for the moment). The Sig 228/229, while a great pistol, is a bit too heavy.

Polymer frame is preferred, as is 9mm.

Have I covered the usual suspects? Anything I should be watching?

Since you already have a Glock 17 and apparently like it, a Glock 19 would be an excellent choice for CCW. It is considerably smaller, yet sacrifices little or nothing in shooting qualities, and dropping from 17 to 15 rounds is insignificant. I have one and like it very much - but my new S&W M&P compact has supplanted it, the natural result of 15+ years of technology catching up.

Yes, initially the G19 was what I was leaning towards. However, the soon-to-be-wifey isn't a Glock fan, and I don't like that I've gotten so used to the unique Glock grip angle that I can't pick up another pistol and shoot accurately without a bit of practice (which perhaps is a deficiency on my behalf... but there it is).

So as much as I like my Glock, my fiance can't shoot it accurately, and I find it hard to pick up her HK and shoot accurately. So it seems like I, being the person who shoots more thus I can smooth this out quickly, should compromise (dangerous trend for a husband to start in a marriage?) and break my Glock-ism.

Normally I'd say go with something that can use your existing magazines when at the range and such, but if the G19 and P228/9 is out, the HK options are probably good. I haven't shot one of the P2000's but I think I'd lean towards that route over the USP compact for actual CCW -- USPc's aren't all that compact and I don't find they conceal terribly well. The P2000 seems like a better bet for that role, looking at them in gunstores.

As for the P7M8, it is either a thing of beauty without peer or you'll find it a bunch of fuss and bunch of money about nothing (middle of the road opinions seem lacking). I personally lean in the former direction, but not enough to put $1400+ towards one. One problem with them, however, is that the manual of arms is peculiar to the weapon and if I were going to carry one for CCW, I don't think I'd bother shooting much anything else to keep from building muddled muscle memory.

You each need different weapons; plain & simple guns fit each of you entirely differently. Do a search on gun fit by user names Pax and sm. You'll get a bevy of info.
