I am barely passable at freehand sharpening and know nothing about building or repairing knives (other than reading threads by the fine craftsmen on this forum). I recently bought a Buck Vantage Pro with the Paul Bos heat treated S30V blade. I love the knife but today I stupidly let it fall to the tile floor. Before the blade was perfectly centered within the liners when closed. After the fall, the blade is now pushed against one of the liners when it is closed (i'll try to post a photo later). How do I return the blade to its centered position? Is there a method to this or is it all trial and error?

You probably bent the front part of Handle and Liner. It is pushing the back edge of the blade, forcing the blade against the liner. It don't take much. If this is the problem just bend the handle and liner back. The second option is send it back to Buck.
I just sent one back for around $10.00 they will bring it back to new.

Thanks Jim....especially for the diagram. How do you recommend bending the liner back? Padded vice?

I'm bad luck and stupidly clumsy around good knives. I once dropped a Pro Tech Godfather on the same tile floor. It landed tip down and made a nice bend on the blade tip. All within one minute of taking it out of the box.

I'm surprised that the steel liners would have bent under the G10. There is just the smallest chance that the halves sheared past each other a little bit. Is the knife difficult to open even after the blade clears the body? This could possibly indicate that the pivot is off a little.

I wouldn't clamp and pry the liner for fear of work hardening/overbending/breaking. Find two flats of steel and clamp it between them in the vice and crank it closed OR send it back to Buck and let them replace the bent piece.

Jim, you'd probably be able to do this with your eyes closed, but not everyone has the level of skill stored in your little pinky.

Thanks for the replies folks. I took y'alls advice and shipped it back to Buck today. Looking forward to see how fast the turnaround time is and if they will fix it. Their warranty states that they will not cover damage due to misuse or abuse. I'm wondering if dropping it on the floor constitutes misuse or abuse. This is a great forum and I appreciate everyone's input.

Repair vs Replace

Be aware that they may replace rather than repair, at their option. If they deem it more cost effective, and there's no sentimental attachment to a particular knife, they may just send you a new one.

They recently replaced one of mine, and I might not have noticed except, well, I'm maybe a little anal about my hardware . . .

I took my Buck 298 Sirus over to the factory right around Xmas. The liner lock was binding under certain conditions. I had Chuck Buck's signature engraved already and asked if they could have CJ Buck sign it as well (most of mine are signed by both men). Normally there's a fee for extra signing, but this time they just mailed me back my knife without comment, and with both signatures.

As I was inspecting the knife, I noticed that the original factory blemish had disappeared, and the "FB" stamp was missing. Then I noticed that the "298" stamp had "moved" and that the year ("08") after Chuck's signature had changed to "09" when his son's signature was added, and finally I noticed that the steel designation had changed from 154CM to ATS34.

They had replaced my Factory Blem knife with a brand new one, gotten both Chuck and CJ to sign it, and sent it back.

I'm a happy camper with a new, fully functional knife . . . but you know what? It's kinda funny that I actually miss the original -- blemished -- knife. I mean, really, why would I care? ATS34 steel is essentially the same as 154CM, certainly the *year* Chuck signed it is not that important, and who in their right mind *wants* a knife with a minor ding in the finish??

I have a number of other "factory blems" in my collection. You know, you can't buy those in stores. You can *only* get them at the factory. From now on, that little "FB" stamp is a badge of pride for me.

Oh, my. Look at me. I'm rambling. How unusual.

Anyway, you may or may not be able to tell, but what they send you back may not be what you sent to them.

Enjoy.
