Need help choosing a stock finish.....

I'm in the process of getting another stock made for my commercial FN Mauser 98 in .270 Winchester.

This is going to be a gift for my sons' birthday this November.

I bought a nice piece of Turkish walnut from LUXUS WALNUT that didn't break the bank, plus it was under $400.00!. If anyone is interested, ask for CLAY @513-260-6200 and tell him Martin sent you. Luxus has 1 and 2 piece blanks for shotguns & rifles!


Anyway,

What finish is best to use? I have experience using Tru-oil on several stocks with excellent results with finishes from satin to gloss on tiger birch & walnut M-14 stocks to Bastogne walnut on sporters.

I have thought about using oil and hand rub the stock but I seem to be in the middle of a dilemma! Should I continue to use Tru-oil since that is what I have experience with or should I try a different approach? Also, is using Tru-oil on a stock considered to be "hand rubbed"?

I am looking for a nice satin or a little higher shine to the stock. It will have ebony for the forend tip & grip cap, and a black 1" Pachmayr pad on it. I want the figuring to be exceptional!

The checkering is going to be 22 LPI "fleur-di-lis" pattern, 1909 Argie hinged triggerguard,and topped off by a Leupold or Nikon scope in Leupold QD bases & rings.

I haven't decided on express sights yet.


So, with that said, what type finish would you guys use if you were in my position? Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Definately Tru-Oil !!! And, if you're dabbing a little on your fingers and rubbing into the wook with your hands (generating some heat with the rubbing), it's definately "hand rubbed". I've done a BP rifle stock with it, and a bamboo backed osage orange longbow I made. With the very fine sanding I did on both, they turned out just about as smooth as glass. The bow gets a LOT of compliments everytime I drag it out and show it to folks.

That's a fine lookin' piece of Walnut !!
