I want a new Rifle. I traded a steyr SBS for a AR-15, and want to replace it. Here is my criteria: .308, Under MOA @ 100yds, 19"-22" Barrel, under
$1000. I prefer somethng "Tactical" since I am going to be a LEO soon. shooting will be from 50-500yds, but want pinpoint accuracy in the 50-200yds "urban" range.

Here are some I have been looking at:

FN PBR Patrol Bolt Rifle, new from FN has 20" medium bull barrel, seems nice

Remington LTR

Tikka T3 -Tactical, or standard

Of course, what I would love to have is a Steyr HBC, but those are really hard to find. the reason i want a HVY contour Barrel is because I want to get into some long range shooting, and want the multiple shot capabilt of a barrel that cools quickly.

The steyr I had was awsome, but after 3 shots, the barrel got hot and started walking the rounds.

If any of you have shot these guns, then please give me reviews. The gun will do double duty as a stand hunting gun for Whitetail, so I want the wieght of the rifle to be under 10lbs.

Thank you for you help.

PS: the Phrase "Tactical" doesn't mean "black", but sometimes there is a legal problem if a "Hunting" rifle is used to take the life of an individual in the defense of others. You can be accused of hunting them.

savage 10fp. if you get the mcmillen or even the choate stock they are very formidable guns even with the factory synthetic stock they are great.. more accurate than a remington. very accurate. great trigger (accutrigger). good factory barrels. overall they are (IMHO) the best deal on the market and one of the most accurate (reasonably priced) factory rifles. just my $.02

The Rem LTR is light and well balanced. With rings and base you can be good to go for under $1000. The trigger is fully adjustable, too. I personally like the field-friendly HS Precision stock over the standard thick-palm-swelled version used on the PSS. That and its' a veritable tack driver out of the box.

you could get a Savage in what ever barrel lenght you would like, put on an awsome stock of your choosing, and pretty nice glass and rings and still have $$ left over from $1000...

I have under a $1000 total in mine
10FP 24" heavy barrel
choate ultimate sniper stock
Bushnell Elite 3200 4X12X40
Burris rings
weaver mounts
Harris bi pod

I'm very happy with it. mine is about 14 lbs, but would be lighter with a lighter stock (this one is quite heavy) and 10 lbs is quite possible.

Go with the Remington LTR. It's as good of a choice as any, but has the added advantage of being the most popular choice among police snipers. I don't know if you'll ever see one in your stint as LEO, but it's more likely than any of the others.

The Savage is the best bang for the buck decision. For $1,000, you'll be able to customize it to a greater extent than you will with the Remington.

You are nearly guaranteed better than 1 MOA from either rifle, and 1/2 MOA is possible, but probably not in their stock configurations. Who knows, you might get lucky.

22 inches will get you everything the .308 can do out to 1,000 yards. Don't go shorter than 18" unless muzzle flash turns you on.

Paint and add-on doo-dads don't create accuracy.

Buy a Remington 700 or a Savage 10 in .308, with a good Leupold 4.5-14x scope, and practice.

After you graduate to wanting something more, have the action trued, spend a few bucks on a decent trigger, have an accuracy smith screw in a match-grade barrel, and have your eyes opened.

I have a LTR which has been sub-moa from day one with any match grade ammo. The trigger was surprisingly good out of the box, I did drop it to about 2-1/4#. I have a piece of 1/4" foam under an Eagle Industries Stock Pak to raise the comb a little. Currently wearing a Bushnell Elite 10x scope with Harris swivel bipod. I can hammer 12 x 18 plates @ 600 yds with this combo from a prone field position.

Planning in advance for ESU/SWAT/ Sniper training, since you aren't a LEO yet? I'd guess that it would be a while before you were eligible to join or train with these teams, but each city is a bit different.

That said, perhaps the department would have some insight into what they field already...they may have 700's or Savages in the locker already. My personal preference would be for Remington, but I have no problem with Savage's offerings. They are both sweet shooters.
