I have recently been given a gun and am trying to do a search on the serial numbers to find out if it is legally registered. I am also trying to find out what kind of gun it is and an approximate worth for insurance purposes after I get it registered in my name. (if it is not stolen) If I find that it is a stolen gun, who do i need to turn it in to and will i be responsible for accepting stolen items? Could someone please point me in the right direction?

It's probably not registered, as most states (Kentucky included) don't require registration.

ID and approx. value can be gotten here if you post good pics of it from a couple angles. The folks here will get you close anyway.

You could call your local LEA and give them the serial # and ask them to run it if you think it's stolen. (Do you think it's stolen? Why, if I might ask?)

IANAL but I would imagine that weather or not you got in trouble for having it would depend entirely on how you got it, and wether you are allowed to have it.

further info

thank you dogmush for your reply. I was given this gun in trade for a gun cabinet i built. the gentleman that gave it to me has had it for about 5 years. It was given to him by a member of a notorious biker gang in this area. It is a six shot revolver, i'm not sure if i am explaining this in the correct lingo, but you have to pull back the hammer every time you fire the gun. It has three places where the serial number is stamped on it: the barrel, right above the trigger guard, and on the inside cylinder where you load the bullits. It says EIG Model E15 Germany. The number on it is 133538 and it has Germany stamped after the serial number on the barrel. The handle  of the gun has been replaced and now has a black, plastic like, check marked grip. I will try to get some pics on here if I can figgure out how. I am a little computer illiterate, (I just figgured out how to use the bold type setting lol). :D The gun is a very pretty gun and it looks like an older model. previous owners were not too good at cleaning it so it had a few rust spots on it when i recieved it. It shoots GREAT though and I really like the way the gun handles. I'm really hoping it is not a stolen gun because I want to keep it. My daughter is currently in the NAVY and she likes guns, I eventually want to be able to give my entire collection to her. I taught her gun safety when she was just a small child and she is a very good shot. I would like to be able to give her all the information on the guns when I give her the collection. That is part of the reason I am doing this research, the other reason is because i have a healthy curiosity where my guns are concerned and just want to find out more. Any help that ya'll can give will be recieved with gratitude.

Found this info on your gun on the Gunbroker.com Forums (Gunbroker is a firearms related auction site, and has a forum for firearms also):
EIG was the name of the American firm who imported and distributed the first revolver your inquiring about. It was made in what was then Western Germany, probably by a company named Rohm. They were sold very inexpensively at that time, circa 1960's. It's value would still be only marginal today.

I'm still trying to dig up some more detail for you, or to at least verify that the above quote is accurate....

Also found a a completed auction from a couple months ago on Gunbroker where one of these sold.Looking at the price guns sell for on auction sites will usually give you a rough estimate on the actual market value of a gun. This one sold for $100.

OK, also found a thread on this forum from 2006 about one of these guns. Pay special attention to what Jim Keenan says.He is one of our very respected, resident experts on guns, especially the more unkown, unusual, old, etc. I'm inclined to trust what says to be pretty accurate.

Hope this info helps out.

Oh, forgot to add, that as far as having the serial number checked, the only real way to do that is to ask your local police to check it for you. There is no database of stolen guns or anything that is accessable by phone, or on the internet, for people to check.Law enforcemet can run a check through thier database, but thats about it.

Thank You

Thank you sooo much jrfoxx. I went to the auction site you suggested and the pics there match my gun perfectly. I also checked out the other post you told me about and from what Mr. Keenan says I think my gun is a Sauer. You people here are truly a God send and i thank you so much for your help. I am looking forward to finding out more about guns. Thank you once again. :D
