I don't have pictures, as my camera isn't currently working, but I'll post them in a reply as soon as I can. I'm trying to track down a magazine for it, but all I can find is many conflicting, confusing articles and forums. On the barrel the text reads:
MANUFACTURED BY SAVAGE ARMS CORP. UTICA. N.Y, U.S.A
PATENTED NOV. 28. 1905. SEP. 7. 1915. SEP. 4. 1917. NOV. 20. 1917

Also above the action reads, "22-Long Rifle" right above the ejection port. It's a bolt action, with a slot for a magazine. The serial number is 8922. I've found it on the very back of the barrel above the bolt, on the stock behind the butt plate, and on the underside of the butt plate itself. It also features an open v notch peep sight, with a screw for elevation adjustment maybe?

Thank you for your time!

I have a strong feeling its a model 1922, but even if it is I can't find anything about the magazine for it, or much about it, for that matter.

Here's a photo of the rifle, the action, and the underside.

See but I thought all the 23's were marked as "sporters" and had that stamped on the barrel. This one doesn't have that.

He was at an estate sale and pulled it out of an old golf bag. It looked pretty rusted so the seller sold it to him for 5 bucks. I cleaned it up and it still shoots straight.

That rifle is a Model 23A. The centerfire versions(23B,23C,23D) were marked "Model 23 Sporter". The markings on yours indicate it appears to be a pre 1933 model. Frank Hass' s "Bolt Action Rifles" has a chapter on the model 23s,geared mostly toward the centerfire models. I recently saw magazines for them on E Bay. Mine shoots well,and is another project in the safe waiting for attention.

Osprey176 that is definitely NOT a 23A. It IS a model 1922, and they are extremely rare. They were in production for one year! It is a shame it isn't in better shape. KenricOtto, do you have the magazine? It isn't worth much without it, but any Savage collector would still like to have one.

Google "Savage model 1922" and see pics of your rifle. The 23A had two locking lugs and the cocking piece was rounded. The 1922 was squared. The 23A will be marked as such on the barrel, the 1922 has only;

Savage Arms Corporation
Utica. New York Made in USA

Despite their rareness, one in very good condition on line has a bid of $150 as I type this. A classic case of rareness doesn't always equal value. Hope this has helped a little. I'd keep right on shooting it.

I miss a lot of things, ospry176!1 LOL Savages are a passion with me and I have a Model 1922 in 98% condition. Still isn't worth much!
