This family heirloom has a 27" octagonal barrel, is serial number 35xx, and is marked 40 cal.

Anyone know what model it is or what exactly it is chambered for?

Thanks!

Could be one of two.

Most likely it's a Marlin 1881 in 40-60 Marlin.
If the markings match up to this link including the patent info.

Otherwise you have a Marlin 1895 in 40-65.

Thanks for the links, SHR970.

The somewhat lengthy patent markings do match those on the 1881.

Other research indicates that records don't exist for serial numbers prior to 4000, so I may never learn details regarding its manufacturing.

Again, thanks for the help.
