I finally got my Yugo/Mauser M48, and thanks to some members on here at a price significantly lower than Mitchell's Mausers. But ...

As predicted, the thing still has a lot of cosmoline on and in it. Started to clean some of it off today and quickly realized that I need to separate the metal parts from the wood parts to do justice to each.

Needless to say, there are no instructions. Can someone take pity on a Mauser neophyte and either explain how to dismember (I mean "disassemble") it, or direct me to a site that has some sort of manual for Mausers?

Looks like a need a special spanner wrench to remove the flush bolt that extends through the action and both sides of the stock. Is there a special Mauser tool I'm looking for, or is there a readily-available universal tool that does the job?

TIA

Yup, leave that bolt alone, no need to remove it.

When you take the bolt apart, make sure the safety is in the middle position, or else you might be posting a reply on here with the infamous 'mauser newbie thinks he broke his rifle' post.

Also, use a wooden dowel and a hammer to tap your barrel bands off as they might be tight.

The front sight hood is much easier to remove than it is to replace. A pair of reversible snap ring pliers is a tool you need to have if you want to make life easy on yourself.

The M48 doesn't have a 'firing pin' takedown donut, but you can press the firing pin against a block of wood to release the tension on the spring to disassemble it.

Hahaha, I made that mistake/post once! I had a heck of a time getting it back. Muasers are such a surplus here, I've been very tempted to get a plastic stock for one and have it cut to 16.1" just for the heck of it.... :D

Did I hear chop a mauser? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Eh, if you're gonna do it, might as well be to one that doesn't have much collector's value (the Yugo).

Surplusrifle.com is a great reference, it should be required reading before anyone shoot a surplus rifle.

Other than that, break/carb cleaner can help with the cosmo on metal. Put the stock in a black bag in the sun to get that out of the stock.

The Yugo is a great rifle (honestly, I shot my best groups of any surplus rifle with the Yugo I stupidly sold).

Thanks.

Yeah, I've gone through 2 cans of brake cleaner already. Still need to separate the wood from the metal to do the job right, though.
