I bought a Ruger mark II Bull Barrel about 2 weeks ago. Friday i got off work early and decided to go shoot and renew my range membership. I shot close to 500rds and noticed towards the end i was getting what looked like keyholing and called it a day..

So tonight i decide to clean it to go to range tomm and get the Jag and rod stuck .. its stuck so bad have to use a hammer to drive it though come to find out the barrel is almost plugged i got a huge solid slug to lead once i got the jag though ..

So what thinks ya bad ammo rough barrel ? Im using Winchester Expert 36 Grain Bullets ive never see any 22 lead this bad. Also the first day i shot it i shot 300 between me and uncle and there was no leading same brand of ammo.

Gonna post this at Rimfire central also so if ya see it there Sorry.

This is the Ammo im using Win Xpert

Lead is tough to get rid of, but I have never seen anything that bad. It almost sounds like you might have had a bullet stuck in the bore.

If you have gotten rid of the worst of the lead, you can probably use solvent like Hoppes and a bronze brush to get rid of the rest. AFAIK, Rugers have never had any special problem with leading. Mine are older but never gave any problems of the sort.

If you get the barrel clean, I would certainly recommend discontinuing use of that ammo. A careful inspection of the barrel should show up any roughness that could cause that much leading, and also any damage that might have been caused.

I could still see though the barrel it just leaded that bad got it on the foul out now after doing soem searching i see other have had problems with this ammo jezz i only got 1k of it left to shoot  :banghead: :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

I am amazed (if not appalled!) to hear of that degree of apparent leading. Very hard to know why really cos, overall ... it is something I have never experienced. And very hard to blame ammo . I mean, .22 lead bullets are always soft lead IIRC.

The velocities of .22lr and the lube etc ... all but (usually) guarantee that leading is so slight as to be usually something we can ignore. Heck .. look at how infrequently most of us actually do a bore clean/scrub ..

If any extra info should seem available on this ... some sorta ''flash of inspiration'' .. be sure to post same .. it is puzzling me for now.

This is my opinion after 40+ years of shooting most 22 ammo is very
poor and you must shoot various brands to find what is best in your gun.
When you do buy large amounts because 9 times of of 10 the company will
discontinue it or change quality.:(

I'd have to wonder whether a bullet might not have disintegrated in the barrel and left behind a hefty chunk of itself. I've never seen that happen, but did hear of it in a rifle barrel years ago.

Basically after looking at it more it looks like there no rifleing its all lead coated ill see if ican get a pic of what came out on the jag and post it

It's that crapola ammo!

UUUUUUGGGGGHHHH!!!!!

DO NOT use that ammo! I know it's cheap but it absolutely suck-diddely-uck-uck-ucks! I bet you bought the cheapest bulk pack ammo at Wal-Mart, right? The federal bulk pack is $1 more, and it is soooo worth it.

I just shot up 2 bulk packs of the Winchester Expert crapola last time I went to the range because my brother sent it to me. At first, I was trying for good groups (with my 10/22T and my MK-6) but after a while, I knew it was making no difference, so I just started trying to get rid of the crap! I just started rapid firing the crap as fast as I could. Really, it groups at least twice as bad as the next comparable ammo.

Speaking from lots of experience using Winchester Expert ammo, it is very common to have under powered loads, over powered loads, hangfires, rounds that just do not shoot period (and still have a good solid firing pin dent on the rim), and my favorite - the amazing expando-case that swells up and freezes in the chamber! Gotta pry the damned things out with a knife or a small screwdriver!

Seriously, avoid this ????? like the plague! If you want good cheap ammo, go for the federal bulk pack. If you want the next level up (good enough for all but the most die hard bullseye shooters) get CCI mini mags. In my 10/22, mini mags will give me groups that look like 1 ragged hole at 50 yds.

i See that now and yeah i bought it at wally mart only becuse they were out of Fed ammo and i wanted to shoot ill shoot up what i have left and be done with it heres a pic of the amount of lead i could find.

Good Lord, that's a lot of lead!

I'd try some different ammo asap if I were you. If the problem clears up using different ammo, then everything is ok. If your barrel keeps leading up, you might need to send your gun in to Ruger. If you do wind up sending it in, don't worry. They will make it good.

Best of luck!

yeah this is my 4th differnt ruger firearm and only one ive had problem with .. Now i know its hard to see but this is where after the one run with foul out lead still is either this stufis worst on planet my opinion right now or the barrel is tight right here..

Sorry for quailty of pic it was jsut a quickey

The amount of lead there is incredible ..... thx for the pic. Well ... gotta say, it is hard to see how ammo can be SO inferior but that's the way it looks. I'd even consider contacting Winchester and having a good moan about it ... something that bad should not even be for sale!

Never used it ...... doesn't look like I will either, any time soon.!:p

Yeah, somethings funky there... I have a Dan Wesson revolver I've literally put many thousands of rounds through, almost all lead with no wash, and I've never had an experience like that.

I had a similar problem with a Ruger Target Competition. It was the crappy ammo. One brand. (Don't remember which, but it was bulk from Wal-Mart, but I think it was Remington.)

It didn't take that long to build up, either. After a few hundred rounds I noticed that the bullets were keyholing at 50'.

You usually don't have to clean a .22 that often, but with this ammo it was needed.

Did not have the problem with any other brand. (This gun didn't particularly like the more expensive Winchester match rounds, either -- not a leading problem, but just wasn't as accurate as some of the cheaper stuff.)

I have a Mk II Slabside and it is definitely not the design of the gun causing the lead problem. My bore stays so clean it almost never needs to be cleaned. I will say, Winchester made a truck load of ammo a while back where about one round in five had no primer. me and the bullseye guys are all shooting it through in league and you regularly hear the "click". Never had any other problems with their ammo. I also shoot cheap Blazer lead ammo and never saw any lead buildup at all.

Weird. I've shot maybe 250 rounds (half box) of that awful WinXP bulk pack through my 6 7/8" Gov MkII with no leading problem at all. I'll agree the stuff has major variation and some excess smoke but every round went bang. I've also tossed a couple of rounds that looked suspicious to my eye when loading, dinged up or otherwise odd (you DO look at your ammo right?). Maybe I got the good box.

I haven't had a leading problem with any ammo so far (Wolf, Aguila, Federal, CCI, and Win). Got a box of Peters I haven't tried yet. Sounds like you had a special cause (bullet stuck in barrel might be right).

Jeez, I shoot nothing but lead in my .357's, 45acp and put a lot of it through a .41 mag but I've never taken that much lead out of a bore!

Ive never seen anything this bad either .. Even when ive overreved the 357 and 44 a but .. i bought to other brands of ammo to try out winchester dynapoint guy at range said he had good luck with those and Federals the guys at rimfire central seem to love..

I did shoot it today again with same crappy ammo and mad sure every bullet hit the papaer and tore it apart at the range and in 50 rounds it was starting to build up again.. I think the ammo is over reved and not lubed right pulled a bullet and dont look lubed at all and dont feel it on the outside.

I'll be honest with you tc, throwing the remainder of that ammo in your range dud bucket would be money well spent. The lube on it, as you have already found out, is anywhere from too thin to non-existent. Of all the bulk packs available, Xpert is the bottom of the line, in fact it is below the line. Heck, it has to use binoculars to see the underside of the line!

Go get some Dynapoints or Fed 550.

Mal i got a box of each of those sitting here im thinking i know couple people i dont like that i might like to give the xperts too

try the winchester wildcats.i have the slabside competition and had very good luck with it in my other 22s as well.its cheap too.toss the experts.

Well back to the range this Am right when they open the doors shot almost a brick of Federal HV value pack guess what no problems i know there copper coated but still i figure if it was something with gun it would show up still.. Got a box of dyna points to try out too.. now how to use the xperts might try um in 10/22 if they dont work there garbage i guess..

Thx for all the replys guess i know what ill shoot from now on out .. Also at 15 yards the feds hit poa at 25 just slightly low not bad

I have the same gun as you. I have shot thousands of rounds and the only time I had a problem is with bulk Remington. I had a hollow "pipe' of lead from the Remington. I had to plug the barrel and soak it in solvent for a few days and then tap it out with a rod. I have never used any Remington ammo in any of my guns since.

I think it's the ammo. I've got the slabside ruger too, and once I've had this problem and it was when I was shooting the Xperts from Winchester. Since then I've not shot anymore Xperts and have never had the problem again.
