I just bought a used Sig P220 American for a ridiculously low price. It's an older one, the slide is marked "Tyson's Corner, VA", so I think this pistol is from 1987 or 88. I haven't checked the date code yet.

Anyways, I was disappointed that the double action pull was nothing like I expect from a SIG. It's sort of heavy, but basically not smooth. Kinda like the DA pull on a Smith and Wesson autopistol. I compared it to my P226, which has the excellent SIG trigger, and the P220 was half as good, maybe worse. The single action pull is very good. Not excellent, but very good.

I don't think there is any mechanical or lubrication issue. The previous owner obviously took excellent care of the pistol. Although the slide shows significant holster wear, the internals are spotless and the barrel gleams. The rails were tastefully lubed. Basically a pistolero's pistol.

So what can I do about this? I looked in the Brownells catalog, and I see you can buy different trigger components. Can I buy new trigger components and have a SIG armorer drop them in? There are like Sig 220 Sport hammer struts, etc. Would these result in a better trigger?

Thanks!

Thanks, gravis. This is exactly what I was looking for! This forum rocks!

Fought that issue some years back. Took the SIG armorer's class, eventually got a 220 of my own. Having somewhat small hands, I reshaped the stock trigger to essentially what SIG sold as the "short" trigger. Also installed the parts for a DAO trigger and eventually sent it into SIG for their trigger enhancement job.

The trigger was not all that bad but never anything to write about, either. I did a little more smoothing on it myself but had to eventually realize that it was never going to feel like a S&W wheelgun, ever. Went back to the DA/SA trigger but had to admit that I was never going to shoot that SIG as well on a good day as I could a 1911 on a bad day. Or a wheelgun. Just the way things are. Finally gave it to a friend who IS a very good shot with 220s and can make them talk.

Ergonomics, quality of trigger pull, etc., DO matter. We get all wrapped around the axle in technical details sometimes and lose sight of the guns that really, really work for us instead of against us.

I am just grateful that in my career I could usually carry something of my own choice rather than a low-bid version of the latest black gun.

I would just shoot the puppy a bit, any good gunsmith can swap out some parts and polish the rest. It is still likely to be a firm DA from the start, but any action can be tuned.

IIRC, stock P220's trigger pull weights for DA/SA is 10.5lbs & 4.5lbs respectively.

Might you ask a gunsmith about reducing the DA trigger weight a tad?
