I got my first automatic shotgun this weekend, a FN Auto Loading Police. It came with two gas pistons one for loads over 1.5 ounces and one for loads under 1.5 ounces. My problem is Winchester, Federal and Remington don’t seem to list the weights of their loads. The list only shot size, number of shot and velocity.

Can anyone help me determine the payload weight of 00 and 000 buck shot loads in both 2.75 and 3 inch shells?

You are misreading the boxes, all shell boxes have the weight of payload on them. The number of shot is the size of shot, then it will say 1 1/8 oz for weight. Standard payload for a 12ga is 1 1/8oz, as light as 7/8oz for superlight loads and as heavy as almost 2oz for 3.5" shells. The buck loads should not be over 1.5oz on either loads.

edit:
Buck loads may not have the weight on the carton, I am not as familiar with loads of buck as standard shot loads, still the weight should not be over 1.5oz for either load.

Thanks for the reply.

All I have are buckshot and slugs. The slugs have weights listed on the box the buckshot do not. After reading your reply I checked Remington’s web site. They do list the weigh of shot on everything except buckshot.

Since the gun came with the over 1.5 ounce piston installed, I will see how well if functions with various buckshot loads.

This site gives you the weight of buckshot pellets in grains.

http://www.firearmstactical.com/briefs10.htm

7000 grains / lb
16 oz / lb

do the math for the number of pellets in the shell.

Shot Diameter wt pellet 9 pellets 12 pellets
Number (Inches) (Grains) oz oz oz
4 0.24 20.6 0.05 0.42 0.57
3 0.25 23.4 0.05 0.48 0.64
2 0.27 29.4 0.07 0.60 0.81
1 0.3 40 0.09 0.82 1.10
0 0.32 48.3 0.11 0.99 1.32
00 0.33 53.8 0.12 1.11 1.48
000 0.36 68 0.16 1.40 1.87

Too bad the spacing doesn't work.

With 00, each pellet weighs roughly 1/8 oz. Thus, a 9 pellet load is 1 1/8 oz, 12, 1 1/4, etc...
