Shotshell technology breakthrough at Remington

Remington has announced a new shotshell wad design that company officials say will be the biggest breakthrough since their Power Piston One-Piece Plastic Wad. The new wad is designed to accelerate steel shot to a higher velocity than ever before.

Current shot load velocities are at the maximum allowed by SAAMI pressure limitations set for safety. Within those pressure limits, the only way to increase velocities from the same size shell is to lessen the payload. Lighter payloads equal fewer shot and lessened effectiveness.

Remington's new wad design, called the Turbo Jet Wad, is a single-piece wad that has a precision engineered ignition chamber sitting under a wad that includes a stress concentrator.

The primer ignites, firing the propellant captured immediately in front of it in the ignition chamber. The "captive charge" in the ignition chamber starts to propel the wad and payload forward - ahead of the main powder charge. The then-increased area behind the wad allows for the remainder of the powder (presumably more or faster powder) to burn - without increasing pressures.

This results in 1700 feet per second velocities, the fastest ever produced in shotshell waterfowl ammunition falling within SAAMI guidelines.

Initially, this new technology will only be available in popular 1-1/8, 1-1/4 and 1-3/8 ounce 12 gauge loads, in both 3 and 3-1/2 inch shells.

Every load will produce the same velocities, producing longer-range lethality and 11% shorter leads on game - the same on-game leads for all loads. The shorter leads amount to about eight inches at forty yards - about the length of a duck's body.

Available Spring, 2010.
