Ok, so I need some assistance. I have owned rifles and pistols forever and need a new shotgun. I do have a 28" Mossberg 500 pump but I would like to have something a bit nicer. The pump was given to me second hand and to be honest I'm not a fan. I would love to go sbs or ou, but have a limited budget as most of my cash has gone to home projects. I know the basics about choke and function, so I'm not a noob. I just need the knowledge of some of you more professional shotguners. My dad and brother love there sbs shotguns and have them from 10 through 20 ga. I though maybe I would be different and do the OU thing sine this would be a first among the family. Budget is $750 and would like 12ga. Looking for options. . . .

*edit* I also don't have anything about used guns if they are good condition.

I'm assuming by sbs you mean SxS, side by side, and not short barrel shotgun.....

For $750, a used Browning, Beretta, SKB can be found - might have to look for it. Field guns tend to be more in that price range than target guns from those names. Since I also shoot a lot of targets, I stick with those brands as a minimum level of quality. There are lesser quality brands from Turkey and other places, that if you're shooting a few boxes a year doing some light hunting that will do a decent job. However, if you're looking to start clay shooting, hunting, etc and intend to put a decent number of shells down the pipe, stick with the better brands. Longevity and eventual repairs will be easier to get done.

Sorry, yes I ment side by side. Also thinking about an over under. Will hunt around GB for anything, are there an models that stand out as quality or exceptional?

43 hits and one response (thank you one), I’m overwhelmed at the enthusiasm . . . back over to the rifle side for me it is. . . . . .

Now, now....THAT'S not the way to win friends and influence people.....let alone get them to help......

Besides GB, there are other sites worth considering.

As I mentioned, I prefer Browning, Beretta, SKB as the typical gun that is decent quality. For SxS, look for an Ugartechea (Uggie) - good Spanish double, OLDER AyA's (NO single triggers), like their matador or the one they sold through Sears

Thanks for the tips. I understand with my limited budget I cannot expect to get something perfect. I’m not bent to ascetics and am not a snob when it comes to used guns. Plus, I intend to shoot it a lot so functionality is my main concern (no safe queens please, I have enough of those). I do prefer the old double triggers.

A little more than 750 but don't know if its worth it. .. . .

This Weatherby is actually made by SKB, I believe. That is a good thing, and probably worth it. The nice thing about O/U's is you can gage wear & use by how far left the action-opening lever has moved. Center to slightly right is usually a good sign of a lightly used gun. Before I would bid, I would request a photo showing the lever from the top view.

One aspect of wear and use. Not all.

I can't give a strong recommendation that someone without knowledge of the things buys a used O/U, unless he also knows firsthand that the gun hasn't been used or abused much.

Despite your being rude, atlanticfire, I will fill you in: your post is one of perhaps a hundred seen here, where someone doesn't ask how much X costs, but rather says, "I want X, and I have no more than Y to spend." Y is invariably half of what X costs, sometimes less than half. Next time, perhaps try asking, "I want Y. How much should I figure?" Nobody does, though. Too bad you're the 101st, but frankly I think people get tired of this stuff.

That said, with a lot of looking, you can scrounge up a good used O/U for $750, but you can also get burned.

Another gun to look at is a Belgian Browning Superposed from 30-50 years ago - the Superposed....fixed chokes.....EXCELLENT well-struck barrels with did I already say...FIXED chokes.....watch for salt wood stocks, but they are within the 750 budget

Where are you getting Superposeds for under 750 bucks?

(BTW how do you watch for salt wood? I know it's a problem, but not how to identify it.)

the ones I saw were typical field guns from the 60's and 70's....so that would mean 12 ans 26 or 28 barrels.....MAYBE a 20

Most of the ones I saw were somewhat more - in the 1-2,000 range, which is still a deal IMO

Those things are so heavy and bulky, they don't do anything for me until they get long enough to balance out.

Now a 20 or 28, that's a different story...:)

I've had a few SxS but prefer the O/U IMHO in the same ga they kick less and are easier for follow up shots, the SxS aim nice but felt recoil is sharper.
I have a nice used SKB 585 12ga reasonable.

AB - the 12's I saw were anywhere from 6-1/4 to 8 pounds with right around 7 being the norm - again for a 12....not that unusual....and considering that many 20's weigh 7#, for the same weight, give me the 12 and its versatility

Sorry if I might have came off rude in the second post, maybe I was a little overzealous about getting a response. I apologize to oneounce since he had responded. The comment about my post being one of several hundred and people being tired of it has a simple resolution, don’t comment. You inquire as you like and I’ll do the same. :neener:
Thanks to everyone that has input. I understand that GB is not a soul source and that here are other options. I was simply using it as a reference for information. My budget is 750 because that’s currently what I have on hand. It’s not out of the question to have a more extended budget over the next few weeks. But as you can tell patients is not one of my virtues. I also have access to purchase new direct from distributors so this is an option to possibly save a few dollars, but I understand that a new sxs could be very expensive. There are several local shops that I can go and look that might help. I like Weatherby rifles so maybe this is way I gravitate this direction. Thanks again and sorry for the overtone.
