This is a Winchester 1895. It is serial number 53XXX. It is caliber 30 US, ie, 30-40 Krag. It has a Lyman rear peep sight. The rear buckhorn sight appears to have been removed from the barrel. The forehead has two distinctly different pieces of wood, and may be been repaired. My Winchester book says that it would have been made in 1905.

How much is a fair market value on this one?

I have one in similar shape but it's a carbine with a Lyman sight also. Mine has never been repaired and I've been quoted a price of $850. I wouldn't trade or sell it as it was my father's deer rifle for as long as I can remember. Winchester 1895 30-40.JPG

I'm no expert, but having seen many similar ones I would say $850-$1000. I recenty saw a prime example in 90% condition for $1900! The repaired forearm really dings you on the value, as does the missing ramp sight.
