I just picked up a Taurus PT145 Millenium Pro for carry. Now I need a reasonably decent holster and I have some questions. First, I'm left handed and I would prefer a strong side carry to a cross draw. A hi-rise design seems towork better for me and I also really prefer an OWB design (after all the food from the holidays, it's all I can do to get myself IWB!! )

Is leather any better that Kydex or a nylon holster? I looked at a few nylon holsters with a lining and some people told me that leather will retain moisture and can possibly cause mildew inside the holster or rust on the metal surfaces of the pistol. The PR145 is a SS slide version with a poly frame, so that may not be a big deal.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

I choose leather -

Lots of people who use leather seem to be satisfied. I can imagine myself equally satisfied with hybrids such as some Tucker makes. Some of the folks who are arguing about the new IDPA rules on holsters say that lots of people who carry carry in leather - no idea whether they are right but it is a fairly common argument. Others correctly point out that people carry in other materials with equal success.

I'd suggest maybe buying 2 holsters in leather and swapping them off just as I would leather shoes if that's a concern. Two is one and one is none anyway. On the other hand good Cordovan is said to stand up to water fairly well. Granted that long term storage in the sheath is hard on a knife I still can't imagine a using regularly wiped down for grit leather holster being a problem - stuck in the back of the drawer that's another story.

Truth is the makers I like best do it in leather.

When it comes to holsters, I like leather... Never had any problems with mold, mildew, or rust due to leather. Pictured below is a new holster and mag pouch I had made for my model 30 Glock.

IMHO, kydex may be the best holster material on the planet, but I find it terribly ugly.... Nylon is as ugly as kydex, and less durable.

Now, before anyone takes offense, please consider the above opinions are coming from someone who bought a really nice leather holster to put a plastic pistol in. :D lol

At the end of the day, I think it just comes down to personal preference. If you want something simple and cheap, then nylon may be for you. If you need something durable, that will do what it is designed to do really well for years to come, kydex may be the ticket... If you like a nicer looking holster, and want a specific design/carry method, grab a custom leather crafter, and let him do his magic.

Let us know what you decide.

For an nice OWB highride holster, I would give www.gunnersalley.com a buzz...They seem to carry holster's at a pretty good price...They also have Kydex (GRRR!) models in stock ready to ship..

Don hume is a good choice as well...Fist is as well, but you can get them cheaper from Gunners Alley...

I'd second Gunnersalley.com but first I'd look for their belt specials

I'd second Gunnersalley.com but first I'd look for their belt specials. Happens I do use a leather belt from them but the Wilderness and other such are fine belts in other materials.

Take a look at Don Hume - http://www.donhume.com/

They will also mail a catalog if you request one. For the Taurus 145 the catalog shows the following holsters available:

H715-MWC - waistband clip on style. Don't have this one.

H721-OT - Open top covered slots. Have one for my 1911 - very nice.

JIT- Open bottom, wrap around front, covered slot. My favorite, I have three of these, XD, M85 and Makarov.

Don Hume has good quality leather and workmanship, very reasonable prices.
