Let me say.....yes I make leather holsters but own and use many Kydex holsters....I think they are perfect for certain applications.
I was surfing and found a nicely made Kydex holster maker that has this to say about the "Advantages of Kydex over leather holsters"....I just want you guys to know the truth........these guys need to do there research better.
# Leather must be treated periodically to slow its decaying process.
***Not true, if properly made the leather will retain its natural oils and not decay....maybe after 10 years, anyway.
# Leather will absorb moisture causing your firearm to be subject to rust and pitting.
*** The moisture its gonna absorb is gun oil and lube, this actually helps keep the gun from rusting as it naturally repells water by nature. Any water the leather absorbs will evaporate from it causing no harm and the oils benefit the gun.
# Leather treatment involves chemicals and acid that can cause finish deterioration.
*** Chromeric Acid is used in Clothing/Upholstery leather and is harmful to guns over time. Vegetable tanned leather is used in gun leather and has NO CHEMICALS that will harm your gun........Sheesh.
# An inside the waistband leather holster can become crushed, causing difficulty in drawing and reholstering your firearm.
***Not in properly molded holsters made from good Back Strap. It does have some flexibility that will cause such things as comfort and the holster molding to you...something that Kydex cannot do.
# Kydex® is thinner than leather; this makes it is easier to conceal and more comfortable.
***Yes its thinner but not more flexible and comfortable. Actually, the flexibility of leather makes it conceal better as Kydex retains its shape no matter what and will print at times when a leather holster wont.
# Kydex® is totally inorganic, avoiding all of the problems of leather; it is easily cleaned with soap and water.
***Leather is wiped down with a slightly damp cloth. Organic materials are cleaned the same way Inorganic ones are.......
Sorry......this just hit me wrong. Again, I like Kydex in the right application.
I just want people to know the facts.............
Shoot well.........
