I have a SIG522 classic, the one with the two-piece plastic hand guard. This original hand guard is prone to coming loose because it is attached up front by a barrel band which itself is secured by only one grub screw onto the barrel.
I bought an AR-15 conversion barrel nut and installed it on the SIG and I also got hold of a used free float DPMS hand guard which is perfect for me as I don't want rails or holes in the hand guard.
So, now I have the rifle set up exactly how I like it in terms of function (I alternate between using the suppressor and the flash hider, depending on mags and ammo):
But: there is an unsightly bulge where the barrel band for the original hand guard attaches.
I don't want a longer hand guard, but it might be feasible for me to have a thin carbon fibre sleeve going back from the bulge into the hand guard. But I wouldn't know how to attach it, and I also don't want to mess with the free floating of this hand guard. I also don't want to grind that bulge off, because if I sell this rifle I want the next owner to be able to revert the rifle to stock configuration if he wants.
