Hi,
While visiting my parents this weekend, my father showed me a shotgun that he inherited 20 years ago from my grandfather. It is a 20 ga Stevens 238a bolt-action shotgun. There is no serial number on it so I assume it was made prior to 1968.
It probably has not been fired in over 50 years, but does seem to be in decent shape (no major rust on the metal parts, wood is OK, etc). Whatever oil/grease was on it has dried up and has "gunked up" the action making it difficult to operate.
I would like to detail strip the gun and get it cleaned up, as it might make a nice gun for my girlfriend. I am looking for any information on how to strip the gun down and how to dis-assemble the bolt assembly for cleaning. I have searched the web and here and come up empty.
Also, I would like to know if there is any way to determine when the gun was made. I know that it is not worth alot, but would like to know the date of production for sentimental reasons.
Thanks,
drc
